Wrist heart rate
The Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR uses Valencell developed technology for optical heart rate monitoring. Valencell is one of the leading innovators in portable biometric data sensing. On the underside of the watch placed LEDs, provided with optical heart rate sensors, light on the skin of the wrist. The light scattered by the blood flow is measured by the sensor. Light which penetrates into the body is predictably scattered according to the dynamics of the blood flow, such as, for example, changes in the pulse or in the blood volume (cardiac output).
Monitor your fitness. Motivate yourself for more motion in everyday life with the activity tracker. A lot of logged data gives you an overview of your physical activity. Your Suunto Spartan Sport monitors all your activities around the clock with step and calorie information so you will always be up to date. Furthermore the watch also logs the duration and quality of your sleep. The watch gives you useful hints as to how your well-being can be maintained of improved.
Be ready immediately. Quick and exact recognition of your position thanks to GLONASS-Technology. Originally, the process and application of GLONASS comes from the military sector. In contrast to GPS-Satellites that transmits on one frequency, GLONASS transmits information over two frequency bands. As such it is possible for every GLONASS receiver to compensate for the delay of the signals and measure the distance to the satellites exactly. Due to this precision, position determinations and speed measurements transmitted using GLONASS are more exact. As such you receive an immediate start with precise location determination of your routes, even in mountains, in the forest, in swamps or in cities.
Compare your personal bests and training data with the peer-to-peer group in your Suunto Movescount App and use peer-to-peer coaching to support yourself and each other while reaching your goals. Discover new fantastic routes with heatmaps and plan your own route in Suunto Movescount and transfer them to the watch for navigation.
With a water resistance of up to 100 m, Spartan Sport is a reliable, accurate training partner during competitions.
In Heatmaps you are shown routes, that are based on millions of Moves that are done most frequently by the worldwide Suunto Movescount community. With the help of the rich topographical maps you can plan your own routes, transfer them to your compatible Suunto watch and exploration begins. Find the coolest places to train in your neighbourhood or on your travels. If you want to show everyone where exactly you are training on your travels, then share it with friends on social media.
FusedAlti- the exact altitude measurement due to the combination of GPS altimeter. Create exact altitude profiles and identify meteorological changes in time. As such you can cancel your tour in time. The optimal solution for you as a hiker, geo-cacher or skier.

However on receiving my watch after using it for a week and getting used to all the data and setting I started to notice some of the more basic features weren't working at all.
My Calorie count was way off! I found my active calories were being added fine but my BMR value wasn't. From 12 midnight through to 6am when I got my total calories always read 0. This made my total for the day come in extremely low. On top of that the graph and totals on the app website and watch all read different and I mean completely different!
The duration for exercise and step counters where off as well.
Often the app and watch would stop syncing and needed unpaired and repaired several time to establish a connection which was a real pain.
Getting in touch with customer service wasn't easy and when I finally get them to analyse my data I have been waiting several days now with no response to my emails what so ever.
Strangely the watch did do a good job of the more technical thing like recording my trail runs walks weights session etc. And if the rest worked I'd be over the moon with this watch.
I'm trying at the moment to get a replacement as I'd really like to think it's a faulty watch. So hopefully I can update this with a better score at some point .
I'd be wary and read a tonne of reviews see if anyone else has issues before commiting. Because it's a lot of your hard earned cash
Unboxing and looks:
It comes in a nice looking and well-presented box with a few instructions and a charging cable. The charging cable is great by the way, it uses quite strong magnets and you simply guide it to the metal charging contact points on the back of the watch and it ‘homes in’ and sticks to it, simple as that.
I really like the look of the watch, it looks quite smart, so if you are going to use this frequently as an everyday watch then I think it would fit the bill nicely. The LCD screen is clear, and is easy to read even in direct sunlight and when you scroll through the menus the backlight comes on for a while (you can switch this off though) which I find useful. The watch face is configurable to your preference with a mix of ‘normal’ watch faces to ones with more data like steps and you can change some of the colour elements of the watch face too which was a nice touch.
I have used the Suunto on runs from 5 to 10K and on cycle rides of between 20 and 30 miles as well as some indoor gym activities.
Using it on runs and cycle rides it performs perfectly well and both the GPS and heart rate monitor appear to be very accurate. Once you’ve finished your activity you load the activity to Suunto’s online service called Movescount. There is also an app for Apple and Android devices. You can upload your run via Bluetooth on your device or via plugging into your PC. This was a bit annoying as it does take quite a long time to upload your run or activity via your phone or by the PC. Also, the Suunto does not have Wi-Fi, so there is no automatic uploading when you get home, you have to either upload via Bluetooth or connect to your PC.
The data on the app and the website is presented nicely and you get a graph for all the main running and cycling metrics like average time, pace, heart rate, energy consumption and an estimated VO2. Analyzing the HR data on the graph on one of my runs there are 2 spikes near the end of the run which were strange as I was not exerting myself at all during those points so it may just have been a slight glitch, but overall the heart rate data looks as expected which was good for a wrist based solution.
GPS wise, I had the Suunto using GPS and GLONASS to gain best accuracy and to be fair, the GPS tracking was pretty accurate. There is an area on my run with dense tree cover and it did show some slightly erratic readings around that area (see photo) but this was sort of expected. In the open though it tracked my route on a bridleway perfectly and was very accurate.
So, from a GPS and heart rate data point of view, it appears to perform very accurately, it just showed a bit of inconsistency with the heart rate spikes.
The Suunto can be configured to display different data for each activity and there are literally loads of activities to choose from which was impressive. However, you must configure the data screens using the website, you can’t make these changes using the watch alone. This was disappointing, especially if you wanted to make some changes when out and about, you just don’t have the option. Making changes to the data screens is not a particularly pleasant experience either and I was left confused (I’ll admit, I am easily confused though!) on numerous occasions. You can’t change one of the existing ‘basic’ configurations, you have to create a new one for some reason. And when you create a new one, I could not for the life of me figure out how to also add a ‘Graph’ screen (like a Heart Rate graph) to my new configuration, this became really irritating.
What I did like though was the amount of data you could have on each screen. You can have up to 7 data fields on a screen. This was a real bonus, but it was just such a shame that the experience of changing these screens was very laborious and had to be done via a PC, you can’t even change them in the app, it has to be done via the website.
The strap is nice and comfortable to use even when you have it tight so that the HRM has good contact with your skin, it’s still comfy. Although as it is a silicone strap, it can be tricky to get the strap through the 2 bands that secure it.
The touchscreen is just not required in my opinion and has probably been added as a USP. It is easier and quicker to just use the buttons in my opinion.
The watch display has an irritating ‘glitch’ too. After a while, the watch face reverts to a simple watch face and all the data like steps etc. disappears, but when you press the centre button, all the data re-appears but there is a ‘glitch like’ transition as the watch very briefly displays the time when the watch went into ‘sleep mode’ so to speak, watch the little video clip and it will hopefully make sense. It just looks weird and almost like this is a bit of an unfinished product. Update - Suunto have released a firmware update in June that has fixed this issue - good effort :-)
The watch can also record your heart rate during the day, but this will eat into your battery life, but the feature is useful if you want to monitor resting heart rate etc. However, it doesn’t keep a record of this data on the movescount app/webpage. What is the point of recording all the data during the day and then not uploading it so you can have a record of it! This then became redundant for me, so I ended up switching off the daily heart rate monitoring to save some battery.
I like the look of the watch, it has nice clean lines and has a ‘premium’ look to it. The menus on the watch itself are all easy to see and navigate. The Movescount website was not the easiest to navigate and having to configure screens only via the PC option is very annoying and restrictive. Performance wise though, it seems to be very accurate with both GPS and Heart Rate monitoring.
All in all though, I think it’s a really good-looking watch that performs really well, but as a package it just feels a bit ‘unfinished’ to me with the watch face glitch and the PC configuration process was a chore and confusing. Hopefully some of these issues will be fixed with firmware updates in the future.
• GPS & Heart Rate accuracy
• Clear screens with up to 7 data fields
• Charging cable is great
• Having to configure the screens using a PC
• Daily Heart Rate data not saved anywhere
• ‘Glitch’ on the watch face when ‘waking it up’
• More running metrics would have been useful
• No Wi-Fi for auto uploads
• No sleep monitoring
