The Suunto Core outdoor sports watch is a feature packed device, designed to help you in your expeditions and climbing. The watch includes an altimeter with an altitude log memory and altitude difference measurement, a barometer with a storm alarm and a weather trend indicator, an automatic alti /baro switch, a compass with a semi-automatic calibration and a digital bearing, a depth meter, a digital thermometer and a multiple watch showing you predicted sunrise/sunset times for over 400 locations in the world. To enhance its functionality, the watch has a backlight type electro-luminescent display and backlight option for night use.
The award-winning Suunto Core gathers a range of data to help you navigate your way through the wilder parts of the world.
AltimeterThe altimeter features a range up to 9000m (29 500 ft). It is ideally suited for all activities where knowing your altitude and ascent and descent rates is essential. The Core altimeter sports an altitude difference measurement that allows you to track your progress in terms of altitude climbed. The log recorder stores all your movements in altitude between the start and stop times, so you can re-live your trip at home - view graphs of changes in altitude during your treks, find out how much you climbed, the duration of ascents and descents, average ascent and descent speed and more.
BarometerSuunto Core displays the current sea level pressure as a detailed graph, showing recording of the last 24 hours with a recording interval of 30 minutes. The weather trend indicator is a useful feature providing quick reference to check upcoming weather conditions. The storm alarm notifies you of a sudden drop in air pressure, which may be related to worsening weather conditions.
Automatic Alti/Baro switchSuunto Core sports an Automatic Alti/Baro switch, a smart feature that senses your movement or lack thereof, switching between altimeter and barometer accordingly. When you’re climbing, it records changes in elevation. And when you stop to rest, it records changes in barometric pressure. A drop in air pressure while you’re sleeping under the stars will be recorded for what it really is: a change in barometric pressure, not altitude
CompassThe digital compass displays the cardinal or half-cardinal point and the North. The declination adjustment function allows you to correct the difference between the true North and magnetic North. You can also set it to track a certain bearing, which helps you follow a chosen direction in the terrain. The compass features a rotating bezel for traditional use (most variants), or a one-touch function that allows you to sight lock and follow a bearing.
Depth meterIntended for snorkeling, the Suunto Core depth meter provides information on current depth and the maximum depth reached during your snorkeling dive. The maximum depth of the device is 10m (32,8 ft).
WatchWatch functions include time, dual time, date, alarm, sports chronograph, countdown timer and predicted times for sunrise and sunset for over 400 locations worldwide.
Don’t get stuck in the darkUse your Suunto Core to know when it’s time to set up camp or keep moving forward. From over 400 locations stored in your Suunto Core, select the one closest to you, and get useful data about sunrise and sunset times in moments.
Avoid harsh weatherStay one step ahead of Mother Nature – use the barometer function on your Suunto Core to help forecast weather changes on your next overnight trip. In the evening, set your Suunto Core to barometer mode and in the morning, you can check the pressure trend and pressure graph to see what kind of weather is in store.
Find the ideal pace on your next ascentMake every step a calculated one – use your Suunto Core to carefully pace yourself on your way to the top. Simply find a reference point and set the altitude in your Suunto Core, then start the altitude difference measurer and begin your climb! At any point during your ascent, a quick glance at your Suunto Core will let you know how far you are from the summit. See all Product Description

Some online searching confirmed that it provided all the functions I would consider necessary in an outdoors watch with the fantastic ability to measure and display altitude, air pressure for weather forecasting and a compass. The same searching also revealed a number of concerns regarding the following which I hope to address:
1) Negative display being difficult to read - I can't agree with other reviewers who found the display difficult to read. It is clear in all types of light and easily readable from all but the most acute angles. I did not find it necessary to adjust the contrast but this can be done from the settings menu. The backlight works very well when using in dim light.
2) Reliability - there seems to have been considerable problems with the early core models regarding both a very short battery life and numerous errors occuring in normal usage. I have read in multiple forums that these issues have mostly been improved at some point in 2009 so any new models won't suffer from the same. In any case, Suunto provide a 2 year warranty.
I have not yet had a chance to accurately test the altimeter, but the barometer and compass functions seem to closely match reference values provided by the metservice and a standard map compass respectively.
Also, I had always been under the impression that unless a watch had a 100m water resistance marking, then it should not be used for any activity where the watch is submerged. The Core is graded as a 30m watch by Suunto but also marketed as a snorkelling watch and comes with a depth meter.Read more ›
I'm in the forces and noticed alot of the suunto's being used by my friends and colleagues, It looks slick, It looks well made and feels as if its ment to be apart of your wrist, for the size of it you hardly know its there and it doesn't feel as bulky as it looks when advertised in pictures.
I do alot of mountain biking, running, hill walking, skiing etc etc, although having not tried it too the full alot of my friends have with their own and say its accurate and takes alot if you end up in a scrape or two.
The functions are easy to use and its easy to navigate around the watch if you need to edit things like time, height and change where you are in the world etc
It comes with a 2 year guarentee from suunto which is good and it takes 5 minutes to register it online.
Ive read alot of reviews about how the battery only lasts a few months, its like anything that uses batteries the more use it and its features the more battery you use and the quicker it goes down, with this watch as long as you dont have the storm alarm on all the time when your not doing anything and you keep the watch in the locked position your battery will last a good while.
Also another gripe Ive read is how people struggle to see the screen with or without the backlight on, I dont have any problems with this, the backlight illuminates up nicely and the screen in daylight is crisp and clear so if thats put you off about purchasing this then dont be.Read more ›
I am a helicopter pilot and find the altimeter to be surprisingly accurate across the whole spectrum I have used it (surface to 10000'). The compass does not appear to have the same level of accuracy but I will give it the benefit of doubt because Suunto do say that it will suffer from magnetic interference around electrical/metal objects. I suspect that the compass works far more accurately in the scenario for which it is intended - hiking.
I have read a few reviews where people have said that the digits are sometimes difficult to read given the grey-on-black digital face. I will agree so far as the digits do not jump right out at you but I would say that it is perfectly usable in all light levels and I prefer the 'stealthy' look that the grey-on-black affords.
Overall, I would recommend this watch to anyone who is considering purchasing it. You will not be let down.
