The story first starts in 2010 and then jumps to 2013, where we see so many conflicting emotions between the friends - regret, guilt, pain, love, and there are some delicate subjects dealt with such as drugs and alcohol, cheating and more, and it shows how the friends are dealing with their feelings three years down the line.
I didn’t feel as connected to this story as I would have liked, it was an emotional book but the connected towards the characters just didn’t seem to gel with me, especially Landon. Landon was a difficult character to read and frustrating as hell, Macy needed a medal to put up with all he dealt her and at times I thought she was an absolute angel, if not a pushover, but she turned out to be one strong lady. Loved Cash's character too and I would have liked to of seen more input from all these secondary characters in the book, which would have added greatly to the story.
This is a good story and if I had felt more connection between the characters in places, it would have been really good.

This one was willing to hit hard enough to leave me more than a little emotional at times. The power with which the author delivered Macy and Landon’s story was so strong that it brought the pain of their situation absolutely front and centre.
One night, one foolish mistake and this group of friends are left with nothing but a desire to go back and never repeat their mistakes again, and as they struggle to come to terms with the events of that night, some more than others this is their story.
Time may have moved on by Landon hasn’t, he continues to carry the weight of the accident heavy in his heart, his punishment is the isolation that he forces on himself, his feelings for Macy are as strong as they have always been but 3 years down the line and she is the one thing he can’t have, he won’t allow himself to have.
But what about Macy?
She loved and still loves Landon but he does everything in his power to try and force her to hate him, he needs her repulsion in order to solidify the way he feels about himself almost but she can’t do it, she can’t blame him for what happened but is she willing to allow his self-loathing to take her future too? Does she think that by letting Landon treat her this way is her punishment for that night?
This was a painful journey for each of them, they may have suffered separately but this was collective grief at its very worst, they perpetuated their own misery.
I found the tone of the book to be almost subdued as it was dealing with a painfully emotional subject matter. An almost narrative prose made the story all the more poignant and it was that, that made the most impact with me.
Beautifully written, this one of the rare books that I can say reduced me to tears.
Surviving Regret by Magen Smith is a story about how to survive after a tragic event rocks your world and what living a life full of regret can do to you. The story does have a few sensitive topics such as drug use, overdose and suicide attempts. It does also involve cheating.
The story focuses on Landon Hayes and his long term girlfriend Macy Thomas. It begins in 2010 when a tragedy strikes which not only changes the lives of Landon and Macy but also their best friends. The story then jumps forward 3 years and we see Landon and Macy clearly still struggling to come to terms with what happened on that fateful night. Landon is spiralling out of control and he only has one shining light left in his life – his Macy except he doesn’t think that she deserves him so continually tries to push her away. Macy still loves Landon despite everything he puts her through and all she can do is sit on the side lines and watch whilst the darkness consumes him.
Now before I start talking about the characters I need to say that this book was really well written and I did enjoy it. It’s a story line I’ve never read about before and it did have a deeper meaning that you only truly understand at the end of the story but I just couldn’t connect with the characters. I really wanted to, I wanted to try and understand how they must be feeling but I just got frustrated with them. For me I am never going to be ok with Landon’s behaviour. He cheated on Macy countless times, including a failed attempt with her sister (and that’s only because they got caught). I get that he was grieving and struggling to cope but I just didn’t like it. Macy also really infuriated me – I know she loved Landon and she could see that he was hurting but I couldn’t understand why she would let him use her the way he did. It took me right until the very end before I started to warm to the characters but it did happen eventually, I wish it had been a little sooner though. I think it was only towards the end that their actions kind of started to make sense. I have to say I did like Cash’s character throughout the book.
I would definitely be interested to read more by this author and I would love to read Cash and Madison’s story!
I did enjoy the story even if I didn’t care much for Landon’s character! It was a fairly emotional read especially at the end. The ending was a definite plus side to this book.
I give Surviving Regret 4 stars.
