This is a hard review for me to write for a few reasons. For a debut novel it is a great start. It has a good strong storyline and plot, engaging characters and a wealth of emotional conflict. It’s a bit of a tough read in places but I wouldn’t expect anything less when an author deals with this kind of plot line. It felt personal, very personal and what I really liked was the raw honesty of the words on the pages. You could feel that this book came from the heart. With a debut novel a reader comes to expect rough edges when reading and this felt no different.
I’m not spoiling anything by saying that this is about one woman’s struggle to escape the clutches of an abusive ex-husband. The domestic violence in here is quite descriptive in places but rather than it be glorified it serves to tell the story in a way that a reader needs in order to feel the connection and compassion with Dana. Despite being that battered woman she comes across as a strong person looking only to protect those that she loves and cares about. I felt that Logan’s story was a little hidden and didn’t quite get that hook a reader needs to love a main character. There are really strong relationship ties throughout this book and that sticks out very much, the secondary characters have their own stories which I’m sure will be brought into their own in due course.
I came across one or two minor inconsistencies and a few duplications but it was easy to see past these when reading as the story was so strong. I do think it needed to be better edited but again I’ve almost come to expect this with debut works, and it wasn’t so bad that I couldn’t keep reading. I also felt that perhaps this book could have had a little more structure to it, sometimes it felt a little wayward.Read more ›
Dana is a survivor of domestic abuse but now she lives in fear always looking over her shoulder for her scumbag of an ex, but not wanting to live in fear for her or her girls she heads to Scotland for her daughter's 10th birthday and to hook up with Logan (the hot Scot) and father to one of her daughter's but he treats both as his own.
Now living in Manchester in a refuge with three other women who have all suffered at the hands of their partners. But after Ian (scumbag ex) finds out where Dana is staying he will stop at nothing to get her back. But with Logan and her old school friend Lee track her down but not wanting to put Logan in anymore trouble and as much as it pains her she thinks he will be better off without her but he is stubborn (most scotsman are) and he wants a life with Dana and the kids he doesn't give up on her. But whilst having girls night Dana hears something and now they are trapped on the refuge and with nowhere to run they lock themselves in the basement.
Will help get to them in time? Will Ian ever be caught or will he get away with what he has done again?
Very well written book based on fact and fiction. I felt I could relate to this story as I had a similar upbringing to Dana I saw it through the eyes of the child. So a lot of this story hit home and it shows no matter what people can survive domestic abuse if they know where to get help and have friends that will be there when it matters the most.
Dana has had an awful life at the hands of her violent husband.
Even when she leaves, she's never really free.
Meeting a lovely man she yearns for happiness, but can she have it.? Will she ever be free from her past?
This book covers the awful topic of domestic violence and the effects it has on the whole family.
Unfortunately this subject is all to real, and lots of women suffer at the hands of their partners, fearing for their lives on a daily basis.
Dawn A Keane has dealt with this situation well in this story, she's showed even though it's difficult you can survive..
A good book, I admired Danas courage throughout she showed you can't let these monsters win.
Looking forward to book 2
Dana is a survivor of domestic abuse. She ran away from her nasty horrid ex husband to find safety for herself and her family. When she meets Logan she finds it hard to trust and let someone take care of her. The chemistry between these two is hot & I was so rooting for them to have a happy ever after. However Danas life can't be easy when her ex is after her.
Really great gritty and emotional read that I just had to read in one sitting. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
I actually know this lady personally. She's so lovely. Our kids go to school together and we have become friends over the last couple years so I bought it to see what kind of writer she is.
I had no idea what her life had been like up until we met. It's based around her true life and can be quite difficult to read at times when it's someone you care about but it sucks you in and you just have to keep reading. Also a little strange reading about your friends sex life in such detail hahaha!!
It's very graphic and uses strong language quite a lot so just keep that in mind if you're easily offended by that sort of thing.
Keep your eyes out for Dawn Keane. She's gonna make it huge and this is just the start.
