"Makes sibling rivalry funny." Cosmopolitan

Book Description

'Makes sibling rivalry funny' Cosmopolitan
'A cracking book with the entangled plot developing at great speed, one of the best in this area' BOOKSELLER

A wonderfully warm and witty debut novel about family secrets and sibling rivalry

The four MacLeod sisters are no strangers to sisterly rivalry and with one of them about to be married, there are bound to be fireworks. Perfectionist Natalie wants the 'wedding of the year'. Harassed mother, Milly, just wishes her bridesmaid's dress wasn't the size of a tent. Career-obsessed Avril secretly moons over a married man and world traveler, Hazel, the youngest, yearns to be taken seriously. Forced together for the first time in years, and with an unexpected guest stirring up old resentments, squabbles are inevitable. But when tragedy strikes things really fly apart - as some shocking skeletons emerge rattling from the crowded MacLeod closet...

4 sisters- 1 travels, 1, mother of 3, 1 successful business women and 1 bride to be! Immediately the reader can identify with one and is hooked.
As traveler sister is summoned home for the wedding so their lives begin to unravel. The wedding has been planned in depth and even takes into account their father's secret addiction, the in-laws disapproval and the bride's desire to be the perfect wife. The arrival of an old (well young and handsome) family friend. doesn't help matters, nor does the fact that the bride has measured the garden in feet, not metres!
The book is well written and the storyline twists and turns keeping the reader's interest. The character's are believable and the relationships between them well thought- out.
I would recommend it to anyone with sisters or a chicklit lover and I will definitely be reading Campbell's work again :)

Milly, a mother of three, is fighting a losing battle with her baby-weight, Avril, the successful Hollywood agent, is full of secrets, which may just tumble out...

Hazel, who would rather backpack and hitch-hike than go to her sister's wedding, the bride-to-be Natalie, whose wedding will ultimately bring them all back together... What will happen when all the sisters are back together?

My first steps into the magical world of the genre that is chick-lit, I have to say, is a pretty good one, so thanks Pam and Lorraine for writing this book! The characters are all different to one another, and don't act the same, which is really good, because most books from more than one POV act very similarly. And are realistic too, portraying what I thought were realistic scenarios. I found that while reading Avril's parts, she has a very obvious posh British accent (I'm not sure if she is supposed to be that way, but she is in my mind!). Easy to read, and time will just whiz by.

Written really well, and is smoothly written, and doesn't feel awkward when reading. My only qualm, however is that the characters all seem to blend into one. It's decent length novel with 422 pages of amusement.

Thoughts on the paperback copy published July 31st 2008;
Front cover shows all the sisters/characters, all as cartoons, which is pretty cool, and has what they're all about on it.
Fairly thick, which will keep you entertained for hours, and has standard sized text, which is fairly easy to read!

Definitely worth a read, especially if you're a fan of Chick-Lit!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (thanks Pam and Lorraine!)

I have just finished reading this book which I thoroughly enjoyed. I actually read Ellie Campbells second book When Good Friends Go Bad, before this one. I found both books really enjoyable and in both cases was keen to find out about the characters and the story line. Well done Ellie Campbell, I am now eagerly awaiting the third book.

How To Survive Your Sisters by Ellie Campbell

The MacLeod sisters gather together after many years for a wedding. Natalie is a perfectionist, she wants the "wedding of the year". Housewife and Mother Milly, wants to lose some weight and look good in her bridesmaid's dress. Career woman Avril, is secretly involved with a married man. And Hazel, the youngest just wants to to be taken seriously.

A tragedy hits the family and things begin to come unglued. Everyone has a secret, shocking as they may be. Will sibling rivalry and deep hidden (family) secrets bring them closer, or pull them apart?

A well written story of sisters, family, sibling rivalry, secrets and unconditional love. Each sister has their strong points and their inner demons that threaten their future happiness. The sibling rivalry, jealously, loyalty and love made it "real"

The story is believable, original, detailed, with many plot twists, turns and secrets. I could not put it down. There were many "didn't-see-that-coming" moments which kept me at the edge of my seat, wanting to know more.

I highly recommend How To Survive Your Sisters to those who love a great dramatic(sisters/family) memorable story.

Are you part of a family with sisters? I am, and I admit we’ve had our differences, but nothing approaching the scale of what greets you between the pages of this book.

The story is of four sisters, ranging in age from 30 to 45, who are more usually at each other’s throats than enjoying the relationship. That is, until something bad happens to one, and then instantly they have each other’s well-being and happiness at heart.

The story opens with the sisters regrouping for a wedding, after years of not seeing each other. The story is a good one and all of the sisters get plenty of page time, meaning I got to know them well. They were well drawn, as were all the major characters. And I enjoyed the convolutions of the plot line as each sister’s story wove itself into it.

There’s love, romance and heartbreak, some of which I anticipated and some that I did not.

The book is a decent length, which I appreciated. I don’t mind the trend to shorter novels but when I can lose myself in one for more than a few hours I’m happy. It’s also well written, which I also appreciated.
