How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I've had this book since I was young and it's got some quite interesting information in it. The chapters are:
1)preparation and equiptment
survival,
2)...in the desert
3)...at sea
4)...in the tropics
5)...in polar regions
6)...in mountains
7)...natural disasters.
8)first aid
9)firemaking, tools and weapons
10)trapping fishing and plant food
11)Navigation and signalling
12)rafts and river crossings
13)ropes and knots
As you can see, it tries to be pretty comprehensive but it really doesn't go into enough detail about basic survival. Things like knots and navigation are quite usefull but just not detailed enough and most of the book doesn't go further than just being an interesting read. For example there is a section that describes, in a few lines, how to capture an animal using a GIANT crossbow made out of tree trunks and huge logs which aims to catch an animal by shooting a 6' long sharpened tree trunk! Something that while quite interesting (amusing?) to turn the page and see, isn't really of any practical use and if you really needed to do that (which I doubt anyone would) there isn't nearly enough info to set it up. Where as things like lighting a fire by friction using a bow which could be quite fun to try it is only covered very briefly and would probarbly having you fumble around the woods all day getting annoyed.(it just basically describes how it works as opposed to telling you about different types of wood to use etc.)
There is some usefull info like the phonetic alphabet and signalling which is one of the books saving graces, along with first aid info and some food sources(again a bit basic but still quite good). Another reason that it gets some stars is that the illustrations are really detailed and accurate, which makes up a little for a lack of text.
Basically if you want a book to read about methods of surviving in the desert, ice etc. then this is a good book to give you a range of quite complex skills people use. But if you want to get these skills in more detail or actually want to attempt them then I would go for a dedicated bushcraft book or something.
