I'd not read any of J.C. Valentine's books before and didn't actually realise that this was the third book in the series but it works very well as a stand alone. Having said that I would like to read the previous two books and any future ones in the series.
It wasn't what you would call a conventional love story but it did have a HEA although I would have liked the book to continue on just a little further. Maybe that happens in the next book in the series.
It was a times raunchy, funny, sad and also rather thought provoking as the two main characters go through different situations. Both have lost a loved one previously in very similar situations but they had each taken a different path in dealing with the pain not that either of them had dealt with it properly.
All in all a good read and certainly an author I will be looking at again but please, please, please J.C.Valentine - learn the difference between your and you're and the correct usage of each!
Jon owns a Publishing Company. He had a painful experience when he was younger and five years later, he is still carrying the guilt of being responsible for the tragedy. He doesn't believe that he deserves to be happy, therefore he hooks up with endless women even if he doesn't have feelings for any of them.
Patti is an accountant. She doesn’t have much luck in relationships as she always seem to pick the wrong partners. She is having a very bad week. First, she catches her boyfriend in the middle of the act, then she loses the job she loves and to top it all she is rear ended whilst driving her most cherished treasure. Her GTO left to her by her dad.
Patti and Jon have a brief meeting on a night out with friends. They are attracted to each other but Patti soon changes her mind about him after seeing the way he behaves. Jon can't get her out of his mind and when he bumps into the back of her car, everything changes. He is determined to get to know her and Patti is willing to take a chance. They start seeing each other and soon realise that they want to spend more time together. Unfortunately, Jon's past catches up with him and he goes back to thinking that he doesn't deserve any happiness despite what everyone else says. Can Patti convince him that he deserves as much happiness as anyone else?
This third instalment in the series can be read as a standalone. Like the first two books, it's quite engaging. It has humour, love, lust, passion and some heartaches. There are surprises along the way. Jon and Patti have this indisputable connection. It's entertaining, easy to read, romantic and sexy. As a bonus the characters from the other books play their parts without taking the focus away from Jon and Patti. It would appeal to 18+ readers.
I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is Patti and Jon's story, both you will have met in That First Kiss - if you've read it, if not you really should. Although the books can all be read as standalone novels, I'd suggest reading them in order to understand the relationships already in play, that being said you will get just as much enjoyment from this book as a standalone.
Jon is an alpha male who refuses to 'surrender to love' having loved and lost in the past he protects himself, and in his opinion others by following the 'one and done' rule, that's until he meets Patti. Patti's first impression of Jon, other than him being gorgeous is not a great one. She sees him as the player that he is, and having been burned by men all her life wants to steer clear. Patti is a great female lead, strong, sassy and determined.
This couple compliment each other really well, they have plenty of ups and downs and their relationship is certainly not an easy one. I loved everything about this book, the pace, storyline, main characters and secondary characters all made this the fantastic 5 stars that it deserves, and I for one cannot wait for the next instalment.
