In this book Mr. Lutzer states that salvation is solely God's work from start to finish. It is his choice as to when a person will receive salvation. The Holy Spirit enlightens a person- opens his/her eyes to the fact that he/she is a sinner who is in need of a Savior as he/she is powerless to save themselves & that he/she is lost & destined for Hell & eternal separation from God in his/her current state. The Holy Spirit convicts the person of his/her sins. The Holy Spirit draws the person close to God & gives him/her faith to believe in Jesus as his/her sin bearer. The person is free to accept Jesus into his/her life. Salvation is a miraculous event which occurs just once & is instantaneous & lasts forever. The person's sins have been forgiven & he has been pardoned. He now has right standing with God & has a restored relationship with him. The Holy Spirit bears witness that the person now belongs to God & is now a child of God & is an heir to a heavenly kingdom. Genuine salvation completely transforms a person's life & he/she is never the same. Because the person now loves God he/she wants to live for God, please him, & serve him. The Christian is completely dependent on God to empower him/her to continue to live for him & to bear fruit. Eternal salvation does not give the person the right to live as he/she pleases as God will chastize his own in love through circumstances or internal despair. The Christian might have lapses in faith, but will never lose his/her salvation. Doubt can actually be healthy if it causes one to look for answers. Doubt can actually result in a stronger faith. Many great men of faith such as John the Baptist, Peter, & Thomas had douts, but later had their faith restored. God loves us in our time of doubt & welcomes our heartfelt questions.
The author wants the reader to be aware that you can be 100% sure that you have been saved if you have put your trust in Christ alone. Christ died for all men- those who sinned greatly & those who sinned to a lesser extent. God will never reject someone who comes to him nor will he cast one of his own out.
It is so difficult for us to realize that we are saved by grace (undeserved favor) plus faith which is given to us by God plus nothing. It is not necessary for us to walk down the isle, fill out a card, join the church or to be baptized to be saved.
In my opinion, it is essential to respond to the inner yearning immediately because you might die suddenly without warning. There are no second chances once you die and your destination is final. You will either be in Heaven or Hell 5 minutes after you die with your memories intact. I was always told not to put off salvation lest you harden your heart. There are very few deathbed confessions. You will die as you have lived. You will either die in the darkness or in the light. The choice is yours. Please choose carefully & wisely.
God is both willing and able to guarantee and maintain the salvation He has given us. And Dr. Lutzer does a masterful job of illuminating this truth that the Bible so clearly teaches.
Readers of this book will come to understand the breadth of what took place at Calvary and what Christ meant when He breathed out His last words: "It is finished" (John 19:30). They will also come to understand the great inner transformation that occurs in those who have truly been regenerated.
Thankfully, we sinful and wretched humans do not have the power to somehow undo what Jesus Christ fully and completely accomplished at the cross, or to thwart the plan that our almighty Father had in place before the foundation of this world was laid.
"He who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life" (John 5:24).
A promise you can count on.
