Now the game:
I adore this game. It is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best RTS I have ever played. It's as simple or as complex as you want to make it, the AI can be monstrous or child-like, depending on how you want it. It is the perfect strategy game.
It is true that it is quite an old game, but still requires a fairly high-spec computer to run well. I intend to buy a gaming laptop soon, and this game is the yardstick with which I will decide weather it is good enough for me to buy.
The package comes with two DVDs, Disc 1 being plain Supreme Commander and Disc 2 being the Forged Alliance expansion pack. The two serial codes are included on a sticker on the inside of the case.
As far as I am aware, this game is not available on Steam.
My recommendation? Buy it if you think you can run it well, or just buy it anyway and wait until you have gear good enough to run it. That's what I'm doing.
As I said, this is the best RTS ever created in my opinion. Patches are also available from various internet sources as THQ/GPG support is not exactly great.
Be prepared for increasing and sometimes surprising challenges as the story of each battle scenario unfolds - be ready for sudden time constraints and long-distance transport tasks!
Although the game is clearly clever enough to accommodate many different styles of gameplay and personal strategic preferences, my own is for medium- or long-term defensive policies, during which I work hard on the gradual accrual of tech and resource dominance, topped off by the satisfying coup-de-grace - and this is a mode that the game rewards - all the really spectacular units lying at the far edges of the tech and resource curves.
The game makes you work hard for the biggest payoffs - the experimental units (with the emphasis on 'mental' as the different factions come up with some truly strange machines) and the mass-destructive weapons, but watching them in action chewing up your opponent makes it all worth while.
Fun, challenging, absorbing and satisfying.
On the other hand, the AI can be a bit samey, and can let you get away with too much delaying. The introduction to the expansion story in 'Forged Alliance' is confusing - the intro movie is dramatic but not very illuminating, and the supplemental 'timeline' animation is confusing in and of itself.
Still worth trying if you like strategy, though.
Other observation; as with TA the single player is tedious but thankfully you have access to the full build tree in forged alliance. The main thing you get is the skirmish mode. This game virtually lacks a third party modding community, unlike TA's scene which seems to still be active - 15 years after initial release. There is a lack of tools to tweak game parameters and unit costs and stats.
AI attacks in more ways than TA - airpower plays a far bigger role than TA, also the AI seems to know how to build range weapons just beyond your defensive range; however the AI land forces rarely progresses beyond tech level 1 so the dominant strategy is early game survival to the tech 4, then wiping the opposition out with experimental units. Base defenses are weak to force a strategy of aggression; sometimes you return from a sortie to find your base gone.
Shields, upgradeable units etc, moveable way points and patrol routes all add to the strategy.
Thorougly enjoyable RTS game, but only for people without a life :) - it is far too addictive and time consuming for someone of my years! :)
