The back story to Supernova is actually more interesting than the studio cut of the film that is available to view. Director's coming and going, one (Walter Hill) taking his name off the credits, butchery by studio interference, different endings, different planned thematics, shelved for two years and etc. Supernova was a messy production and sadly it shows, making Walter Hill's original cut (unavailable) the Magnificent Ambersons of the sci-fi genre.

Plot, in the skew-whiff edited version we are fed here, is basically a riff on Ridley Scott's Alien. Space dudes up in space take on board a too good to be true hitch-hiker dude, which is a bad idea. Sadly it's all very dull, yet strangely you can see that in amongst the mess, and the often used diversion tactic of Robin Tunney's breasts, there was a very good film here. Brains and effects work to light up the screen, some sexy sizzle marrying up to the tension up there in the galaxy, James Spader on wonderfully broody and heroically damaged form, and some belting deleted scenes on the DVD. But, it's not to be, so the studio should be ashamed of themselves, even if it isn't quite the ultimate stinker it has been painted as. But! Super it is not, in any shape or form. 5/10

This is an exciting, visually stunning but flawed sci-fi film:it is quite derivative in places, mostly echoing "alien" and has a female computer which is kind of a flip-side to Hal from "2001...".Also,the film does not seem quite sure what it is trying to say or how philosophically its trying to say it(the excellent deleted scenes section of the dvd shows just how much the message had been tweaked by the time of release).Despite these faults-which are not glaringly obvious as you watch-I found it thoroughly enjoyable.Spader is quietly mesmeric as the ex drug addict forced to take control of the ship and is ably backed up by the initially frosty Angela Basset. The special effects are stunning and perform exactly as they should, drawing you into the film without being too flashy.Well worth viewing if you like sci-fi films and the cut-scenes on the dvd are a good addition.Someone should tell Lou Diamond Phillips to give up his day job though...

This is a classic representation of the Sci Fi genre set in a 'Alien' environment complete with familiar characters. The film however has the potential to be greater than the cut that we actual see and it is only by viewing the deleted scenes that we can start to appreciate the potential of this vision. I can see this film revised in ten years as a Director's cut with a new opening sequence and added tension leading to a pay off finish. If you saw the film at the cinema it is worth getting the DVD to see the lost sequences and allow yourself to reedit the film and enjoy something that the Director must have originally envisaged.

Ok, to give this even two stars may be a little generous but here goes...

The pros: It is filled with interesting concepts and details. There is fairly awesome future tech. Some of the acting is good. The ship looks kind of cool. The bad guy is fairly badass. Angela Bassett is in it.

The cons: The awkward shagging. The explanations. The ending. The ending. The ending. The plot black holes. The ending.

I'm really not sure if they ran out of money, time or patience but instead of finishing the movie in any decent fashion, they rushed in a plot device, tried to leave the audience with a gooey warm feeling (which almost worked when I puked a little) but just failed. If this had have been a homage to Alien, they'd have stopped the film at the last death. Played out with a bit of class, but no.

If the sci-fi murder by number theme could be compared to sex: Alien was a classy partner who gradually seduced you and made you feel valued, Event Horizon was a bit of a tart but was good dirty fun. Supernova was a cheap prostitute who took your money and was clearly thinking about the shopping while it waited for you to finish and left you feeling like you might want to visit a clinic afterwards

This is an entertaining movie, which certainly takes its cues from 'Alien'. A mixture of sci-fi, with some minor horror elements thrown in as well. The plot revolves around a 9th dimensional object that has the potential to cause a catastrophic cosmic event, and that has had some rather strange side affects on the man found with it. Most of the cast seem to take their clothes off every so often, which adds to the entertainment, but does make it quite hard to take seriously.

Can't argue with the good cast though: James Spader, Angela Bassett and in a brief role Robert Forester. They all do their best, but the sum of its parts never quite add up!

This was one Spader movie, that I just couldnt get into. A huge amount of talking among themselves and to a strange functioning on board computer , sound quality was poor for a 2000 manufactured DVD leaving me to to put our cinema sound volume way up, to here almost anything, "Alien hunter" on the other hand was, what a reasonable sci fi movie, James looks better with long hair like in Stargate, his crew cut made him look like all the others. As they say, cant please everyone 100% of the time:)
