Review

"This colossal encyclopedia of all things superhero could not have come at a better time. With a slew of comic-book movies each year, kids are more interested than ever in anything to do with these heroes . . . It is a must-buy for comic readers interested in knowing the early roots and conceptions of comic-book heroes." --"School Library Journal "

"Being a 'super-hero' book rather than a 'comic book' book, it includes plenty of non-comics entries . . . Happily, it has both a contents page and an index." --"Comic Buyer's Guide"

"It definitely fills a much-needed niche in the growing lore of the genre and will be a welcome addition to the collection of any fan of spectacular superhero sagas. Excelsior!" --Stan Lee

"This book is alive with detail, generous with comic book cover reproductions, comprehensive, colorful, accurate, and, most of all, entertaining. It wants to cover as much ground as possible, and cover it right. The impressive thing is, it succeeds . . . This encyclopedia is inspiring, and as a reference tool it is going to get a lot of use." --"Silver Bullet Comics "

"From Adam Strange to Zorro, the second edition of "The Superhero Book" delivers on its promise to be the Ultimate Encyclopedia of Comic-Book Icons and Hollywood Heroes. Just plain fun . . . this inexpensive volume delivers the goods with a biff!, bam!, and pow! Recommended." --"Booklist" (May 2012)

What! Wonder Wart-Hog (aka Philbert Desanex) doesn't make the cut - have these guys NO sense of humour?

(The hog was far from a one-hit wonder either: see Vance Bass's online bibliography, from 1962 almost to date.)

5.0 out of 5 stars the Superhero Book is SUPER! 25 Feb. 2013
By martez detroit - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
All you fans of comics and TV super heroes will love this book. It is really as it is described. It's petty much ever hero you can think of. I have loved comics for years and years and this book is so rich i cant even get through it. You will love every page. Each entry is a clear synopsis of every hero or group, plus the history of tv appearances and comics origins. Just awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage Of The Genre 4 Sept. 2012
By Sandra Iler Kirkland - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The Superhero Book by Gina Misiroglu is an encyclopedia of all the known superheroes. At over four hundred pages, it is an exhaustive survey of this genre as well as being a colorful and accessible entry into the superhero world.

Each superhero is given an entry that talks about the media (TV, comics, graphic novel, etc) as well as a full-color image. The background of the hero is given, as well as their entire team if they work with someone else. Supernatural powers are explored along with any moral code or any weaknesses. A timeline of appearances is given, and if the hero was killed off, an explanation of their demise. Superheros from Superman to The Powerpuff Girls are explored.

Gina Misirouglu, also known as The Taskmistress, has authored or edited more than three dozen books in the genres of popular culture, biography, American history, folklore and women's studies.

Graphic novels are becoming more and more popular with the advent of the entire anime genre. Superheroes are a constant in every time period; only the media used to tell their stories changes. Humans need to believe that there is a balance in the world between good and evil, and that there are those who stand ready to right that balance when it is askew. This book is recommended for readers who follow these heroes and anyone interested in learning more about them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the “ultimate,” but still very good 9 July 2016
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
OK, we all know what “Superheroes” are – guys and gals, humans, aliens and robots with seemingly extraordinary powers. This handy dandy book is an encyclopedia of superheroes, going from Adam Strange to Zorro. And in between are Batman, the Watchmen and even the Powerpuff Girls.

First off, I must agree with the charge that this book truly isn’t the “ultimate” encyclopedia of superheroes. There are some heroes who get short shrift, and some who are ignored altogether. For example, the Kick-Ass stories are only mentioned in a quick reference to Hit-Girl in the section called, “Good Girls Go Bad.”

But, that said, I did find that the book does cover many superheroes in a good manner. Each section discusses the hero, his or her powers, and history right up to the publication date of the book.

I rather liked the book, and spent many good hours reading through about heroes I know and heroes I don’t. If you like superhero stories, then I think you will like this book. I know I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Bedside Book For Comics Nerds 16 April 2013
By Chris Ward - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
As an encyclopedic reference, thus can't be beat for looking up specific characters and getting a solid notion of their histories in brief. But even better, it's a real pleasure to browse. At bedtime I read four or five pages, revisiting characters I loved as a kid and learning about superheroes and comics published long before I was born or long after I stopped reading comics regularly. That passion for comics never really dies, and this book is a treat for those of us who once lived for the next issue of Daredevil or Dr. Strange-- the authors are members of the club, and know the minutiae that make us comics nerds happy. This is great fun as a reference resource and as a browsable work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 24 Aug. 2013

Excellent book in excellent condition. I really enjoy comic book reference books as much as comic books themselves. Great book for research and inspires branching out into new titles and characters for collecting.
