When people look to nominate the greatest soul album of the seventies, Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" usually takes the award. In my humble opinion that's not even the best album Marvin recorded. For my money "Superfly" wins hands down everytime.
This has the coolest grooves, the loveliest licks, and Curtis sublime vocals talking about social problems, the like of which had never been tackled with in such a mesmeric manner before.
While Marvin was asking,"What's going on?", Curtis was telling us.

This album isn't simply a blaxploitation soundtrack but one of the greatest albums ever made. Curtis envelopes his unbridled anger at the waste of life brought about by drugs, and the need for love and community in his own inimitable style. Curtis believed in self-help and community, he set up the Curtom label to allow himself and fellow musicians to be self-suficient. He wasn't just a great "soul" singer, musician, and song-writer but a towering artist of the 20th Century. This record, his output with the Impressions, his first solo album "Curtis" and "Roots" are testaments to his genius.

Any one interested in 70s culture/funk/soul/hip hop should own this album. Curtis Mayfield was a pioneer in the music world and this album still sounds brillant today and still has relevance to the times we live in

I remember going to see the movie just so I could hear the soundtrack - at that point it was not yet released. As soon as it was I bought it and played it to death. As soon as it was released on CD it bought it and played it to death.
It is astonishing to think the album is now over 30 years old. If it was released for the first time in 2005 it would be a worldwide smash - it really is that good.
