The patterns include farm animals (chickens, goat, cow, etc), a couple of people, pet animals (mice, guinea pig, cat, dog, fish, etc), exotic animals (koala, emu, lion, alpaca, etc) and even a short Christmas section (reindeer, fairy, etc). There's not a single duff creation in the book, and the instructions are easy to follow. If you want to duplicate the effect achieved exactly then it's easy to get the yarns used (mostly Rowan), and the patterns are in UK English so there's no confusion over terminology.
If you're an absolute beginner you'll probably need a helping hand, but anyone who can manage plain double crochet should have no trouble, so long as you remember to use a marker for the beginning of the rounds.
Some people may not think this is too much of a problem, but working on the right side does give a neater and more consistent finish. The lack of attention to this may mean that your finished pieces come out with a different shape than those pictured in this book.
Some of the tensions in the pieces looks very lose and stuffing is very visible. This may be another reason your pieces come out looking different from the photos. Dylan's head is very loosely stitched, but his clothes are very tightly worked. If you do a consistent tension, will his clothes fit?
Despite the criticism, I do love the designs but would urge people to be aware of the right/wrong side and tension issues and adapt where necessary to achieve the shape they would like.
When I got this book I was a beginner, having never really done it before. The patterns were really easy to follow (with a little help understanding it from my mum) and there are even some guides on how to crochet at the back which help! (not confusing like some).
I would recommend this book to beginners and experienced people as the toys are just so cute!
