Product description

Product Description

The Bomberman series has been delighting fans with its stunning multiplayer action since 1983. The premise of the game is simple: guide your chosen Bomberman around a maze-like play area using timed bombs to open walkways and take out players or CPU-controlled adversaries. Super Bomberman R retains these core elements but places them with updated visuals that offer greater detail while still remaining faithful to the series' origins.

Super Bomberman R makes full use of the Nintendo Switch system capabilities, which enables gamers to play wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. Super Bomberman R offers a 'Battle' mode where up to eight players are dropped within a maze until the 'last man standing' is declared the winner. There is also a 'Story' mode where one to two players work cooperatively to clear a series of 50 stages in order to save the galaxy.

All key Bomberman elements return for the Nintendo Switch title, including useful items found within the destructible areas of each maze. Removing a wall will often reveal a power-up to extend the range of the explosion or endow the user's Bomberman with a useful skill. These include faster movement, the ability to kick or throw bombs, and more. Thus, as players gain ever more devastating capabilities, they must use all their skill and ingenuity to ensure their opponents get caught in a blast while avoiding its fiery touch!

One of my most memorable gaming experiences from back in the day was Super Bomberman on the Super Nintendo. It was loud, colourful and bursting with frenzied multiplayer fun. So, I was thrilled when I learnt that Super Bomberman R would be a launch day title for the Nintendo Switch.

Sadly, this modern-day version has not met my expectations. Please don’t misunderstand me. There is a lot of fun to be had from this version, but it’s got several problems, which significantly detract from the fun.

First, let’s start with the things I do like. The 8-player battle mode, both online and local play is a huge draw to me. I Love it. I also like the story mode with the massive boss fights. The intro and cut sequences with the big, bold cartoon animations are great fun too.

The things I don’t like. The controls feel sluggish and unrefined. It’s desperately difficult to plant a bomb and then run around a tight 90-degree corner on an isometric playing field when the controls are unbalanced. It’s frustrating to the point where its distracting me from the enjoyment of an otherwise good game.

The other things I don’t like are the in-game character voice acting. They are corny and in my opinion don’t add any value. There is also no option to turn them off.

And finally, the price. There is nothing particularly new in this version to warrant a whopping £60 price tag. The game is good and has some nice touches, but this would have been bettered positioned with a sub £30 price point.

Verdict: Fun, but has problems. Bomberman aficionados will love it, but will probably feel a little short changed with the hefty price tag. Improve the controls, put an option on the voices and reduce the price and this average game becomes standout.

Had this a week and its taken this long to realise that I have actually been royally ripped off with this. Big nintendo fan so launch day i eagerly opened my switch, zelda, 1-2 switch and this. I've desperately wanted to love it, after all its release day of my brand new toy, and bomberman should be the perfect game for this format... but it is actually useless! The online is unplayable. The lag / game hangs ruin it completely - how hard is it to run network games of bomberman ??? we can run COD or battlefield with many more players and run them perfect, yet bomberman is unplayable. the controls in local multiplayer are awful and clunky, i keep killing myself at the start of games, it's just horrid to play. Oh how i wish for the advanced Sega Saturn with its 10 players and all round awesomness (nearly 20 years ago i'm guessing that came out). The only thing i can put this down to is purely to rip off a quick buck from loyal nintendo customers, if they had an ounce of pride there's no way they could put out such a useless version of a classic game at such a high price.

I got this as well as Zelda to go with our new switch but we've tried it for a few hours and not getting much fun out of it. We'd not played Bomberman before and was hoping it would be a good multiplayer game for when the kids had friends round but they just can't get into. The story mode is not very storyish or interesting. If it was 25 pounds or thereabouts then I'd be happy enough but at the price I paid ( about 44 I think) I regret my purchase. The controls don't seem to work very well some of the time either - just not a very satisfying game.

Picked this up as a pre-order for the cost of £42.99 which I feel is slightly on the expensive side considering what the game is.

However this game was one of my favourite childhood games and it offers a fantastic nostalgic multi-player experience. I would highly recommend it for multiplayer purposes.

Don't get me wrong, I like this game. Its bomberman after all. But the definitive edition, it is not. The xbox version was awesome and only cost 10 quid in comparison plus 3.99 per add on, of which i purchased all 3. Still nowhere near the price of this.
Online still needs some bugs ironing out as well. I'm still going to play it, but it'll never be as good as the xbox live bomberman. Shame really.

It's actually 3-stars, however I'm giving one more as a bonus to Konami, hoping that they will fix some issues regarding the controls.

I am a huge multiplayer Bomberman fan and I was so glad it got released on the Switch. I have to admit, however, that the controls do not feel that smooth. There seems to be some input lag on the controls, which is crucial for a Bomberman game. You will get lots of accidental deaths.

Online matches sometimes work great, other times it's just impossible to play due to huge lag.

Overall, it's a great addition for the Switch, and hopefully Konami will fix these early issues.

This is an awesome local multiplayer game, I have played this for hours already, mainly with my kids, the joycons are ideal for this game!

However, as a single player it is okay if a little repetitive.

Online play is okay but could have been so much better too.

The most important thing in a Bomberman game is how responsive character movement and bomb laying is. This game somehow fails that to an incredible degree leaving a sense of frustration as even experienced players walk into walls or place bombs in the wrong places.

The story is slow and boring with you battling against predictable AI without any time limit. The multiplayer suffers from even more movement/bomb delay which prevents any high level play or tactics. I've yet to even mention the non game-play related issues such as the cringe inducing voice acting or the customisation options that make this look like a £5 game.

I'm a massive fan of Bomberman and have played a huge amount of titles, this is the worst one I've ever played.
