In 1923, Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory and the father of Japanese whisky, built Japan’s first malt whisky distillery in the Vale of Yamazaki. The distillery’s location on the outskirts of Japan’s ancient capital of Kyoto offered pure waters, diversity of climate and high humidity—the ideal environment for the maturation of good whisky. Today, Suntory Yamazaki is one of the most popular single malt whiskies in Japan and enjoyed by whiskey connoisseurs around the world.
From the manufacturer
The Yamazaki Distillery is Japan's first and oldest malt whisky distillery established in 1923 by Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii - The Yamazaki Distillery is thus the birthplace of Japanese whisky.
Inspired by traditional Scottish whisky, Torii envisioned a Japanese approach by choosing a terrain and climate completely different to those of Scotland to create a unique kind of whisky.
Nestled proudly on the periphery of Kyoto, this region was formerly referred to as 'Minaseno', where one of the purest waters of Japan originates.
The Yamazaki Distillery is where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers converge, providing a unique misty climate and one of Japan's softest waters.
The diversity of this region's temperature and humidity creates ideal conditions for cask aging, known as the signature 'Suntory Maturation'.

It is unpeated, so there is a nice clean taste.
Japanese whiskies are frequently voted the best, in the World Whisky awards each year.
It is a darker colour than a lot of scottish malt whiskies but tastes similar to a speyside malt.
Definitely easy to see why the japanese are starting to create a reputation for producing good malts.
This whisky has a gloriously smooth taste and mellow undertones. It is easy on the palate and easily digested without the unpleasant after taste some whiskies can leave. And all that without a hint of peat anywhere.
The packaging is pleasant and delivery arrived within specified timescales.
Overall I am extremely pleased with this purchase. I can honestly say that my husband and I are now converted and will be indulging in more Japanese "nectar" in the future. Well done Suntory!
