Product Description

Limited Edition 2CD Set includes a 6-track disc of acoustic bonus tracks. Avast, ye landlubbers! From the deepest darkest depths of eastern Scotland comes Alestorm, a drunken band of pirates on an epic quest to drink your beer, steal your rum, and be the greatest damn band that ever did sail the seven seas! Hot on the heels of their recent live album "Live at the End of the World", Alestorm are releasing their 4th full length album, entitled "Sunset on the Golden Age". Prepare to have your mind blown with some of the catchiest Pirate Metal anthems you've ever heard, with tales of mythological creatures, epic battles, and swashbuckling action that'll make you want to raise up a pint of rum and sing your heart out! Describing their style as "True Scottish Pirate Metal", Alestorm plays an infectious blend of modern folk and power metal with a unique piratical twist. After forming in 2006 and rapidly gaining a cult following in their local scene, the band signed to Austria's Napalm Records, and released three groundbreaking albums; "Captain Morgan's Revenge" (2008), "Black Sails at Midnight" (2009), and "Back Through Time" (2011). Chris Bowes (vocalist/keytar) :"This is gonna blow all your expectations as to what an Alestorm album is all about. Over the past couple of years we've been writing non-stop, and we've come up with a ton of badass material. It's gonna rule!"

Alestorm's Sunset on the Golden Age is an enjoyable, but flawed album. Whilst the music is still very much in the vein of their previous work, the band have clearly made an effort to expand their sound, and for the most part it is successful.

Sunset on the Golden Age opens strongly. "Walk the Plank" is typical of the Alestorm sound, though the use of an electric organ adds a slightly new twist to the formula. "Drink" doesn't really have any new tricks in this song, but the sing-along chorus will make it a live favourite. "Magnetic North" is a little more sombre, featuring a melancholic folk melody and lyrics that tell of a doomed quest. There is a curve-ball halfway through when the song unleashes a short, heavy (for Alestorm) breakdown. "1741 (The Battle of Cartagena)" is Alestorm doing 'epic'. Opening with a chiptune version of the songs main riff, the song tells the story of the titular naval battle. The chorus is catchy, and the swirling synths add drama.

After this opening salvo I found the album stalls, at least slightly. "Mead From Hell", Surf Squid Warfare" and "Quest for Ships" aren't bad songs, but compared to the previous tracks they just lack something and fall a bit flat. Taken alone the songs would be acceptable, but the sequencing means we get three middling tracks one after the other. Lyrically, I found "Mead From Hell" and especially "Surf Squid Warfare" a bit tiresome, the wacky humour a bit forced.

"Wooden Leg" could well be another filler track, but I quite enjoy it. The song has a punky vibe, and the lyrics didn't feel forced. The lyrics are stupid, but in an enjoyable way.

The cover version of Taio Cruz's "Hangover" is a quite successful.

I love Alestorm and this album is awesome, after buying their previous albums and seeing them at Sonisphere 2014 I had to buy this album and I wasn't dissapointed :) some really catchy songs such as Drink, Wooden Leg and of course Quest for Ships.

Pirate Heavy Metal... I don't think there is more you can say about this album, other than to listen to it and form your own opinion.

I would say that there are a couple of songs that get a bit screamy/shouty at times -and detract a bit from the album.
But, the majority of the album is brilliant and will make you want to crack open the rum and sing your heart out.

...also, the Tiao Cruz cover adds a further level of strange brilliance to a good album :)

Absolutely fantastic! These guys always bring out brilliant albums but this one just goes leaps and bounds further. Drink and Magnetic North are incredible, very much looking forward to hearing them live on tour soon.

Ahoy mates!

Metal & Pirate stories???

Well, never really thought of it before, but it works!

This is the one and only Alestorm album I've heard, and I think it is very enjoyable. A great listen, full of sonic surprise and hilarious lyrics. Vocals sound like a mighty pirate is really singing in the band. The image I get is hard beaten pirates armed to the teeth with axes, drums, synths and amplifiers having a hell of a rock party on some tropical beach next to the fire.

Go on and enjoy this album. Let these pirate guys take your beer. It's worth it.

Yo - Ho - Ho!!!

Probably because these guys made it cool.

I LOVE this band. I don't even drink and I'm not even a real pirate! In fact I would probably be keelhauled by the crew as a filthy, teetotal, non-pirate, educated and clean landlubber but don't let that put you off. They managed to scrape out the barrel once more to produce their 4th album and it still manages to rock hard. If you like serious bands and serious material with serious meanings, don't buy this. Or do. Whatever, But really... don't take these guys seriously - they'll pillage your village worse than a Viking ever could. That is not an innuendo. Or maybe it is. Who cares.

Buy this album or walk the plank.

Arr!

It seems Alestorm can't produce an album that's anything short of excellent - my favourite band since I bought Black Sails at Midnight. Sunset is as good as anything they've done in the past, and they continue to stretch their boundaries while still delivering the solid pirate metal that you expect. The tracks might benefit from some re-ordering, as I agree with another reviewer that tracks 5-8 are a little too similar in tempo to go well together. Small quibble aside, one of the best albums available with some knockout tracks.
