Talented producer Tony Cox was able to provide the very talented Mick Softley with a fantastic line up of backing musicians and singers for these two albums which were put down in 1970/1971. There are already so many impressively positive and accredited reviews of Mick's work by critics and musicians in the business, what can I say ? Born in 1941 ( same year as Bob Dylan ) Mick grew up in the Herts area of England , his parents having come over from Ireland ( just how many talented singers/musicians/poets can that country produce !) . In 1965 the 17 yr old Donovan used to go to the Beat Poet type folk club in Hemel Hempstead called The Spinning Wheel which Mick ( then 24yrs old having been a "head free troubadour " all over Europe since 1959 ) set up and ran . Donovan used to sing there along with lots of other singers including a young Maddy Prior. Apparently too many people were enjoying themselves for the comfort of the 1965/1966 local "Establishment " and so the Police had it closed down after about a year. I first clocked the name of Mick Softley as the author of a beautiful song called Goldwatch Blues recorded by Donovan on his Fairytale album, I think. I also heard his Time Machine on a CBS rock compilation album. I was thrilled to catch him live a couple of times at the Half Moon Folk Club in Putney around 1972 and then again one night at the Troubador in West London before he disappeared off elsewhere. I mystically met up with him on another couple of occasions. I am so pleased that these two albums have been put onto CD format and made available because they are real gems and of such outstanding studio quality - so far ahead of his time they are right up to the minute both in their lyrics and musical interpretations .Read more ›

Why it took so long to get these albums out on CD is beyond me, Mick's voice, Guitar and songs should have been available to the world on CD a longtime ago. I understand CBS gave Mick some control over the production on the albums and it shows his larger than life personality and love of words and music shines through on trac after track. Sunrise features "Time Machine" which was included on one of the CBS rock machine samplers (the one with Arnold the Governator on the cover) which got some notice in america, it was also a single. Other songs such as "Ship" and "You go your way - I'll go mine" are simply outstanding whilst the briefly titled "If you're not part of the solution you must be part of the problem" gets straight to the heart of the issue whilst "Love Colours" sees Mike in more cntemplative mood

Street Singer is different and in many ways the more commercial of the 2. Why it took Mick so long toput out his version of "Goldwatch Blues" (and note the subtle word changes Donovan had included in his version) is unknown - one of the best industrial protest songs ever! this CD is awash with great music "New Day New Way" simply grabs all who listen whilst "people's talkin' Bout hard times" is a great play on the blues. "Water Sister Water Brither" is probably one of the first environmental warning songs - some 20 years before it became fashionable.

Mick made another album for CBS "Any Mother Doesn't Grumble" and it is time that became available on CD as well. I understand he also made some albums elsewhere so there is more to listen to if someone will just issue the mans songs.

Some artists record more than they should Mick recorded less thanhe should - get this double album CD and "Songs for Swinging Survivors" also available from Amazon and give yourself a treat

two gems of albums for any one interested in the english folk/blues scene of the late sixties, beautifull solo acoustic songs[on the road again, waterfall, caravan,]and some with that lovely eastern sixties touch of tablas/sitar/flutes[eagle,love colours]some pretty average stuff with a full band, but the best of it really shines out with that swingin troubadour contemplating nature, god +the highway ,very uniquely english[though with an american influence, blues, gospel etc] as so much of the music of that era/scene is.if you like jansch/renbourn/drake/chapman this is for you.

A wonderful long lost singer/songwriter from days gone by, in the genre of rodriguez or jonathan kelly. Wonderful to have rediscovered him.
