THE PEARLFISHERS: A SUNFLOWER AT CHRISTMAS
Christmas albums are almost always a bad idea, signalling either an avalanche of cynically-assembled schmaltz or a Scrooge-like puncturing of sentimentality, such as Low¹s Christmas album from a few years back, which, while marvellous, was too depressing to listen to on 25 December. Thank Santa, then, for the Pearlfishers, as their bold effort is a triumph: a sincere, joyful celebration of Yuletide which manages to throw in sleighbells, carols, Christmas tree artwork and even a man going "ho ho ho" without, for the most part, tipping over into slush. The tone is set by opening track Snowboardin¹, a Beach Boys pastiche about how great it is to fool about "in sallopettes and orange mitts in Aviemore and St Moritz". Winter Roads and The Snow Lamb provide reflective contrast, and, like Christmas, it¹s all over far too quickly.

Call me sentimental but I love a good Christmas album - with the operative word being good. Clearly the benchmark in this territory is Phil Spector's eponymous album and this recording is every bit as moving and melodic as that. I'm already a convert to the PF's heady concoction of sublime melodies and harmonies but this one tweaks a few extra heartstrings. Snowboarding is the 'up' opener which gets your foot tapping. Winter roads the delicate and sparkling follow-on and by the time you get to Blue December - one of my favourites in it's earlier incarnation on 'The Strange Underworld of the tall poppies'- you are hooked. It really does tread that line very well between sentiment and genuine emotion and delivers on every level. The version of Away in a Manger is genuinely heartfelt and the harmonies deployed in the Sunflower at Christmas segment are mind-blowing and worth of Brian Wilson at it's best. This is a truly beautiful and inspiring set of songs at any time of year...so remember the Pearlfishers are for life and not just for Christmas! Please buy this or any other Pearlfishers recording - they are truly special. Take Care, Happy New Year! Love, Neil

I've had this beautiful collection of Christmas songs for a decade now (can't believe it's been that long!). We play it every Christmas, many many times. In fact it is THE 'go to' soundtrack to the festive season in our household. Why? Because it is simply wonderful, moving, poignant - and also such a welcome change from the usual tired old Christmas songs you tend to hear throughout the season (yet still very much in the tradition of the Christmas song; these lovely compositions don't stray too far from the tried and tested formula we've come to love over the years: there's sleigh bells, passages with brass. 'Ho,ho,ho's' and everything!) I have no doubt I will play it till my last Christmas too - all Pearlfishers albums have been the soundtracking my life since I was lucky enough to discover them way back when.

However, the REAL reason I've now been moved to review this CD after all this time is that I have recently only discovered (as you will do if you haven't already) that the CD featured here is very different to the one you will receive if you buy it from Amazon (and take advantage of the 'Autorip' free download). What you will receive with the downloaded version is a further five (yes FIVE) tracks making this a proper 'full' album (as opposed to a very generous EP).

And what fantastic extra tunes they are: 'The Holly and the Ivy' (the traditional hymn given a predictably lush reworking) 'Battersea Bardot (On Christmas Day)' (first featured on the album
