About the Author

Born in Guinea, author and playwright Djibril Tamsir Niane is a descendant of griots - African oral historians/storytellers. He translated Sundita, as told by the griot Djeli Mama dou Kouyate, into French under the title Soundjata ou Epoque Mandiginue in 1960. It was later translated into English by G.D. Pickett in 1965.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to read if you love african culture 12 Jun. 2012
By mariam - Published on Amazon.com

The book is very well written and gives the reader an insight to one of the greatest empires of Africa. In the book there is a map, that explains the geography of the Malian empire, there are also explanations in the back of the book of names, places, african terms etc... But what makes this book more fascinating is the description of the african culture in other words customs, spirituality, religion and the role of men and women. I recommend this story to anyone who loves african culture, who simply is looking for a good book to read and share with thier kids. The story of Sundiata has messages of love, peace, determination, treason but mostly how important family and the community is important in our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT AFRICA... 3 Oct. 2013
By Fredrick Vincent - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book is awesome on so many levels that would take too much time to elaborate. But one thing that makes it very special for me is its richness in the African culture of storytelling devoid of the skeptical elements sometimes found in modern African literature. This book doesn't try to explain the unknown, it simply tells it like it is and leaves it to the readers to believe whatever they want to believe. Sure, reading this story requires a certain suspension of belief in the way the world as we know it works, and yes the author does emphasize a whole lot on the total awesomeness of Maghan Sundiata, but beneath all of this is an insightful tale rich in important life lessons, such as the difficulties of achieving greatness and the futility of tampering with destiny. What will be will be. Long Live Eternal Mali. Long Live Great Africa!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good product 16 Feb. 2014

It was in fairly good condition, however, a section of the pages did fall out.
Although that was semi troublesome, books do fall apart and can happen at any time.
