Ronnie (Sammy) Johnston was a Tyneside actor and good friends with Jimmy Nail, Tim Healy and just about every other Geordie entertainer. I remember him best as Stick in the series Spender, but he was a regular in North East based drama until his untimely death. His friends then set about marking his life in the best way possible with a biannual concert bringing together the faces of the North East in a festival of music and sketches that appeal to everyone. The proceeds go to providing frants to up and coming performers in the Noerth East who need a hand up and they get to appear on this DVD as well.
This year, the cast of Auf Wiedersehen Pet do Camelot to great comic effect, Denise Welch is tagged and sent to clean graffiti and the night finishes with the obligatory Lindisfarne song. There is so much to this DVD, there is something for everyone and in buying it you will help upcoming artists on their way into work.
Simply brilliant, or alternatively Geet Canny like.
Held at Newcastle City Hall, highlights of the night on here for me include the cast of the hit TV comedy 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet', along with Denise Welch who come together to do a special, staged in so-called 'Camelot', comedian Tim Healey duetting with Lorraine Crosby (the girl who sang with Meatloaf on his hit 'I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)', on 'Up Where We Belong', two hilarious new sketches with feature the naturally very funny 'Emmerdale' actress Charlie Hardwick and Charles Lawson, who used to play Jim McDonald in 'Coronation Street', and a contribution from one of my very favourite new comedians Chris Ramsey. As well as a host of other talented people, both established and up and coming, I was very much entertained for a whopping 135 minutes with this DVD.
Although the price tag for 'Sunday For Sammy 2014' may seem rather hefty, I still felt that I was getting great value for such a high quality show, especially one which I know I'll want to watch all over again.
