Book Description

In this Japanese ink painting book renowned Japanese master Shozo Sato offers his own personal teaching on the beautiful art of sumi-e painting.

Sumi-e: The Art of Japanese Ink Painting provides step-by-step, photo-by-photo instructions to guide learners in the correct form, motions and techniques of Japanese sumi-e painting.

Featuring gorgeous images and practical advice, it includes guided instructions for 35 different paintings. From waterfalls to bamboo, learners paint their way to understanding sumi-e—a style of painting that is characteristically Asian and has been practiced for well over 1,000 years. Although it's sometimes confused with calligraphy, as the tools used are the same, sumi-e instead tries to capture the essence of an object or scene in the fewest possible strokes.

This all-in-one resource also provides a timeline of brush painting history, a glossary of terms, a guide to sources and an index—making it a tool to use and treasure, for amateurs and professionals alike. This sumi-e introduction is ideal for anyone with a love of Japanese art or the desire to learn to paint in a classic Asian style.

Synopsis

All warfare is based on deception. Thus, when able to attack, we must seem unable. Hold out bait to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is quick to anger, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant.

My son asked for a copy of Art of War for his 16th birthday. He had heard of it from friends, I think, but didn't know much about it.
I was keen to get a good translation, nicely presented. Something that he could keep and refer back to as the years went by.

After looking at several other versions, I settled on this one.

First it's hardback, an obvious requirement, and good quality.

What I liked most is the inclusion of the original Chinese preceding each English translation. Lionel Giles' translation is widely regarded as excellent, with no twisting of the meaning "suit a western perspective". It's a straight translation, and let the western reader draw his or her own meaning from it.

Recommended.

HASH(0x860205ac) out of 5 stars Timeless Wisdom 13 Jun. 2007
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
As others have noted some of the tactical advice is thousands of years out of date, but the vision of strategic issues is still very relevant. This edition is well written and an easy read.

It does not take an interest in the military to make this a great read.
It is also a great read for anyone interested in politics and will help one to understand the antics of folks like James Carville.

Sun Tzu is also the foundation of much of the work of Col John Boyd that has had such a major impact on the current military.

A reader of Sun Tzu might have a very different take on why there has not been a massive terrorist attack on America after 9-11. One of his basic principles is to separate the population from the enemy leadership. Clearly 9-11 connected the leaders with the population. The absence of an attack has allowed the anti-war movement space to become effective.

Knowledge of Sun Tzu is most helpful in understanding a major force on current world leaders from Chinese leadership Muslim fundamentalists.

HASH(0x860d85e8) out of 5 stars Simplified Chinese, not interlinear traditional as shown 30 July 2014

Be careful, this edition is NOT the same as the one in the "look inside" images. This one does NOT have the original traditional text interlinear with the English translation, as shown in the "look inside" images. It has simplified text all at the end of the book.

i like the fact that i'm not getting the extended version that someone has translated and added "THEIR" opinion. great read, just shows how much thought was put into going to war back then compared to these days.
HASH(0x86a7a060) out of 5 stars The Superior Translation 16 Nov. 2014
By Andrew Kozak - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
An excellent dual-language presentation, this text of "The Art of War" provides alternating-language content in a natural page flow as opposed to side by side. This allows the reader to keep her place more easily when jumping back and forth between languages.
