This is Geraldine O Neill's 9th novel and it is up there with the best, This book is a real page turner you totally identify with the characters, We travel between Offaly in Ireland and New Castle and Scotland, if you were never in these places by the end of this book you definately will feel you have visited them. As you turn each page you really don't want it to end and when it does finish you are left wanting more. I think Geraldine O Neill has wonderful highly descriptive work which will have you enthralled from the start .

Having grown up in a small Scottish village with her parents and brothers , Lily decides to fly the nest and enrolled In Teacher training college in Newcastle. When an aunt in Ireland dies and the family with the exception of her mother go to the funeral , Lily finds her world turned upside down . When drunk , her father makes a confession that ensures Lily's summer will be spent soul searching . Meeting Dara , a fellow student in Ireland has Lily falling in love but can their long distance relationship work ? Combine that with Ava , an employee of the guest house they are staying in who on first appearances is sweeter than sugar but with a underlying dark streak and a thing for one of Lily's brothers it proves to be trouble for Lily from the start. As tension heightens she spends her summer working on a cruise ship giving her plenty of time to think about her life and what she wants from it.
An easy going read , perfect if you don't want to have to think too much . I loved Lily and Dara and had the normal feelings of dislike for the villain .

Yet another 5 star page turner for this excellent author! I loved this story from start to finish, and especially enjoyed all the twists and turns! Being Scottish myself made it all the more real for me and I eagerly await her next best seller!

This is a moving story of how it is the little things in life that upsets us the most. As seems to be with all Irish story characters the reader forms a wonderful connection to them instantly and enjoys sharing both the good times and bad.
