Really enjoyed this book, have read several of Karen Swan's other books and this was up with the good ones. A book you can't stop reading, with plenty going on , it snot just a slushy romance, but lots of stories happening and twists too. The ending was a bit quick, all wrapped up and done once it got there, but its good in the sense I didn't want to leave the characters behind.

This is the second book by Karen Swan that I had pleasure to read and be sure that I will be keeping my eye on her every next release. And I hope it's going to happen sooner rather than later because Karen is going to write two novels a year from now! Result!

The story follows Rowena Tipton, who is a professional photographer and who settles very comfortably into her life with her business and a long - term boyfriend Matt. You can imagine her surprise when Matt decides that he needs a "break" from this relationship, that he needs to start missing Ro again, and goes travelling to Asia for six months. And it's actually fait accompli. So Ro, after the initial shock, decides to spend her summer in the US, in Hamptons strictly speaking. She has luck to find, in a very funny way, a houseshare with three other flatmates, Hump, Bobbie and Greg. There is everything she can dream of: glamorous parties, tennis courts, horses, wonderful house to live in, fantastic new friends, brilliant scenery and there are endless chances for her to takes photos, the sky is the limit, so perhaps this once the summer without Matt is not going to be so bad?

The characters couldn't be more different from each other if you asked for it and this was a totally enjoyable fact. I loved Hump (the strangest name I have ever come across in the book) and his laid - back life attitude, Bobbi with her sharper than knife tongue, Florence with her ideas and I liked Ted, although he entered the story in a very stormy way.

I've always been a real fan of Karen Swan's wonderfully atmospheric Christmas novels but haven't before tried any of her other novels. I chose "The Summer Without You" hoping for as much of a summer vibe as she gives to her Christmas based stories to get me in the summer mood.

The first I noticed was the sheer length of this book, it's a hefty 420 pages well beyond other books within this genre. It's a book clearly packing lots of story in, and this proved to be the case if sometimes to it's detriment.

The story of Rowena, a self employed photographer whose boyfriend Matt chooses to run off for 6 months to Asia, putting their relationship on pause rather than proposing leads us through a chance encounter to a house share in the exclusive Hamptons where Ro hopes to spend time doing the photography she loves and counting the days till her boyfriend comes home and she can pick up her life again. With her lively housemates Hump, Greg and Bobbi she is soon drawn into the exclusive and wealthy Hamptons lifestyles.

She meets town councillor and campaigner Florence who is trying to save the sand dunes which are being massively erroded by winter storms and which are needed to protect the properties along the shoreline. Florence though is receiving expensive gifts from a stranger and there's talk in town about the $3 million black hole in the council budgets and Ro doesn't want to believe her friend is guilty of wrongdoing.

There is also her new age yoga teacher friend Melody and her powerful older husband Brooke. They seem to be uber rich and although they are unwilling to share information about precisely what his job is.
