Amazon Review

Judy Blume first won legions of fans with such young adult classics as Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and Forever, in which she tackles the cultural hot button of teenage sexuality. In Summer Sisters, her third novel for adults, the author again explores the ramifications of love--and lust--for two friends. Initially, the differences between Caitlin Somers and Victoria Leonard (or "Vix", as Caitlin christens her) draw them together: privileged Caitlin is wild and outspoken, beautiful but emotionally fragile, while working-class Vix is shy, reserved and plain in comparison. After Caitlin selects Vix to accompany her to her father's home in Martha's Vineyard for the summer, the two become inextricably connected as "summer sisters".

On the Vineyard, Vix and Caitlin first find love, then sex--and lots of it. Yet Blume soon moves beyond hot fun in the summer sun, tracing the romantic and familial travails of the two from pre-adolescence to adulthood. Solid Vix evolves into Victoria, an equally solid, Harvard-educated, Manhattan public relations executive. Unpredictable Caitlin opts out of college and travels to Europe, where she has a string of short-lived affairs with a series of intriguing (in every sense of the word) foreigners. It is only after she returns to the Vineyard that Caitlin does the unthinkable, forever changing both her friendship with Vix and their lives. Blume once again proves herself a master of the female psyche, and Summer Sisters is likely to entertain both her post-adolescent and more mature readers. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I got really attached to this book and more so its characters when I first read it. I found myself crying at the end because I'd finished the book. Summer Sisters describes growing up in such a realistic way, she captures the emotions and the events to perfection. The contrasts between sensible Vix and headstrong Caitlin are worked so well that even though they are unlikely friends on paper, you feel like they really complement eachother. One of the other reviewers mentioned readers with a problem with homosexuality might not like this book, well I disagree. Summer Sisters deals with sexuality, not homo-sexuality, it shows how the two girls come to terms with their new found sexuality as they venture into womenhood, and the story follows this process sensitively. Judy Blume is very honest about the experiences that teenagers go through, and the difficulties they encounter. Sometimes you read a chapter that describes an event and it's almost painfully honest, you remember things about your childhood that your mind had put to one side. At the end of the day, it is a story about two strong women, very different, but bonded by many summers of secrets and experiences together while they were growing up. They are both role models for young girls, showing how ambition and dreams can come in different forms for different people. It's about following your head as well as your heart. I almost wish Judy would give us a sequel, but I'd rather this story stayed forever perfect in my memory.

Every summer I find myself returning to Martha’s Vineyard with Vix and Caitlin, I feel an overwhelming need to say thank you to Judy Blume.

Thank you for the story that has grown with me, a story that I will never be without.

As a child I read everything you wrote and once I’d exhausted the children’s/teens section I was left heartbroken, but then my dad appeared with a book I hadn’t seen before, your third novel for adults, Summer Sisters.

My teenage self eagerly delved into the pages and before I knew it I found myself enthralled and captivated by a friendship that grew over years, I remember losing myself in the girls summers whilst laughing and crying with them.
I never realised with that first read the impact this story would have on my life, the hold these characters would have on my heart.

Every summer I am overwhelmed by the need to be reunited with your words, to visit my friends within the pages and fall in love with the story all over again.

With every read something new resonates with me, as I’ve gotten older I find myself relating to the girls at different stages and this is something that I can’t thank you enough for, the Summer Sisters will always be the story that keeps growing with me.

So Judy Blume, with all my heart I thank you for the words…

I am 20, I read all of Judy's Novels' when I was a child and was delighted when I discovered That Judy had written adult novels. Well, much like the other reviews that I have read on this page so far, this novel was fantastic. Once again I felt like I was invited to read someone's personal diary, then became emtionally involved with it.It's honest and superb story telling was so refreshing.I found myself trying to find a moment throughtout a busy day to escape back into this novel.I can honestly say that this novel could possibly get anyone out of a reading rut, this is how a book should be.I usually have poor concentration but this novel managed to take me on an emotional rollercoaster. It was set into small, easy chapters and was very readable. I have attempted to, but cannot possiblly put into words just how fantastic and moving this novel is. I would recommend this novel to anyone aged 18+.

As a teenager I loved to read judy volume, so was excited to hear she had written a book for adults. Like her teenage and children's fiction this story is very much character driven. I really enjoyed the way the story dipped occasionally into other peoples minds through the use of multi character narrative.

This book is beautifully written, it paints a picture of the characters as they grow and mature that is almost like looking through an old photo album... snapshots of there life at different stages, giving the book an almost melancholic feel. In many ways I was reminded throughout of the Bette middler film "beaches" although it's more quietly moving than a real tear jearker.

Like "forever" this book deals fairly graphically with the main characters sexuality and sexual experiences and while it could in no way be called an erotic novel it could shock some readers.

You know when you go on holiday and take a book with you to read on the sunlounger? And how the time spent reading the book can either enhance your holiday or be a part of it you'd rather forget? Well for me, reading Summer Sisters was as much a lovely part of Italy as the lakes, the food and the glorious sunshine. Each day I looked forward to relaxing by the pool with this beautiful book almost as much as I did to exploring the stunning towns and countryside around me. I won't go into details of the absorbing story, the delightful characters or the evocative setting that beckons, because it has already been done, but suffice to say this is a book that will remain among my fondest memories for a long time to come.
