These gala concert recordings tend not to be very attractive, especially if recorded in the open-air.
The Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concerts in Schonbrunn are free to attend, and the technology involved and design of the "band-shell" is stunning, as many will have seen on television and some will have been lucky enough to be there on the night!
The recording has been made for ORF and DG by Teldex of Berlin, who have recorded this orchestra so successfully for BMG and Sony, and who recorded the New Year's Day concert this year (2012) with such outstanding results. While the sound is definitely not that of the Musikverein, it is very rich, with plenty of sheen on the strings and brass, is perhaps more analytical than the usual Goldener Saal acoustic, with benefits especially to the percussion which does not get subsumed into the general musical picture as it so often does in Vienna. Only in the quietest of passages is there the occasional hint of a "dead acoustic" normally associated with open-air performances-so technically it is a success, far better than the previous year's release.
Artistically it is similarly blessed, with Gergiev on generally " breakneck" form, giving these pieces with great elan. After a deep and sombre opening, Les Preludes whizzes by excitingly, the Pictures at an Exhibition is as fine as many other performances and better than most- and the recording is stunning-with just the occasional regret that Gergiev does not pull back just a tad at times- and by contrast, the Sibelius miniature is beautifully elegant and wistful.
That leaves what I suspect will be ,for many, reason alone to buy this disc-Kreisler's single movement confection of Paganini's First Violin Concerto.
