“And that smile was enough to turn any girl on, which was why she kept being snarky at him whenever he flashed it at her. She didn’t normally react to guys like she did to him.” - Abby
Abby wasn't like any girl Lance had shown an interest in before and I think having to work to gain her trust and get close gave him the opportunity to get to know her better; this isn't something he'd ever really done with a girl before and getting to actually know her, made him want to hang around and be in her life. Lance’s persistence and caring nature towards Abby helped to show her that not all guys are the same and that there are some good ones out there who will stay around and give you the love you need. Abby and Lance are a couple who you will find yourself falling in love with and hoping they last longer than just the summer. You can see that they're destined to be together and need what each other brings to the relationship. I liked how they challenged each other, which allowed them to grow closer and become more than just a casual fling.
This is the second book I've read by Jerica MacMillan and I loved it just as much as False Assumptions, book 6 of this series. I love that each book of the series seems to deal with different subjects and isn't just a repeat of the same plots again and again like some series can be. I find Jerica MacMillan’s books enjoyable to read as they flow effortlessly and allow me to become involved in what's happening rather than trying to figure out the characters or complicated storylines. I love Jerica MacMillan’s writing style and will definitely be keeping up to date with the rest of this series.
So, this book throws you straight into the action! In the middle of a crazy college party, we get out first glimpse of Abby and it’s immediately obvious she’s completely out of place. And my reaction to this? I fell in love with her and she is so relatable. I too am that person that sticks out like a sore thumb at parties, so I was feeling her awkwardness right along with her. So when her first, incredibly embarrassing, encounter with Lance happens, I was dying inside for her! It was awful, but so so amusing to read. I immediately fell in love with Lance’s cheeky behaviour and I new I was a goner. And if his good manners, charming personality and gentlemanly ways weren’t enough, he’s a tall, brown-eyed, football player! If you weren’t already in love…
While the romance is definitely the highlight of this book, it also deals with some really serious storylines. Not only is Lance dealing with the fear of disappointing his family, Abby is harbouring her own fears about who is left of hers. She is such a guarded character and you can’t blame her after all she’s been through. Seeing her try to open up to Lance, and often failing, was heart-breaking as I could see how much they both cared for each other but there were just too many barriers in the way. This really is a roller-coaster, will-they-won’t-they-read, so be prepared for some serious angst and frustration!
Overall, Summer Fling is a great start to a fantastic series. I am well and truly hooked, desperate to see who, and what, else is going on at Marycliff University. Huge thanks to the author and an even bigger recommendation to others to start this series!
Abby is a quiet and reserved person. She is not one to go to parties, she prefers to stay at home. That is unless her roommate Megan bribes her. Little did Abby know that going to a party will change her life.
'Megan told me I had to. She thinks I need to break out of my shell more. I'm not sold on the idea, but she promised she'd do all the dishes this week if I went.'
It is a cute, opposites attract novel. It must be hard finding someone you really like and know that it cannot go very far because one is leaving.
'We can't see each other because I'm leaving? We can't have some fun together because it has a definite end date?'
Overall, I did really like this book, despite the slight criticism. It was highly enjoyable. I am really looking forward to reading about Megan!
Boy meets girl at party, takes her on dates even though he was the love em and leave em type.
She is secretive about her unwell mother but falls for the boy.
They live happily ever after.
