Running at a lean and spry 96min, Clint Eastwood's Sully isn't so much a clinical bio-pic in the traditional sense, but an absorbing showcase of a man's extraordinary professionalism in the face of danger.

On Thursday, January 15th, 2009, the world witnessed the "Miracle on the Hudson" when Captain Chesley Sullenburger (Tom Hanks) glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.

Tom Hanks underplays Sullenburger but in so doing he brings out the multi-layered human qualities in the man. This is about a man who has 42 years of flying experience and he knows the aircraft like it is the back of his hand. Here is a man who does his job to the best of his abilities and he does it well. He will tell you he is not a hero but simply a man who is just doing his job. From a man with no time he becomes the man of all time. However, he is shaken to his very core when the doubts start to set in as the NTSB rips apart his heroic maneuver. Is Sullenburger a hero or a fraud?

The story rests on Tom Hank's abled shoulders who has built a reputation playing understated and reluctant heroes in Bridge of Spies and Captain Phillips. On first look Hank didn't seem to put on his acting hat, but after a night of rumination his character continues to stay with me. His sullenly insular and taciturn manner displays a fully functioning problem-solver's mind, calculating the probability of survival in that instance when the birds hit the plane engines. Thank goodness he trusts his instincts rather than the computer.

The more technical and historically minded among you will probably want to find a copy of the very readable book that surveyed ALL the issues around the incident and that fills in ALOT more detail without needing to worry about drama or the politics. 'Fly-By-Wire: The Geese, The Glide, The Miracle on the Hudson' by William Langewiesche. The film itself was careful to avoid the Airbus 'fly by wire' debate completely.

The film itself is a sure-handed Eastwood direction, with Tom Hanks starring, and good performances from the whole caste (many real life participants). It's a Great disaster movie but with differences. The previews give a good idea and did the film proud. The film's first distinguishing feature is of course that it is very close to the facts, true for all intents and purposes. Second it looks at the post accident investigation, which is not usually in the limelight and where covered in the news, is usually a more grim and impersonal affair. As the film's investigation chair points out at the end, not something he has ever before been able to do with the pilots attending. Next, it is a very short sharp 'disaster'; it's the icing on the cake of a view of events, as much or more about the mop up and recovery than just the accident. This is a more personal, human and unexpected but visibly life changing perspective, that is very hard to make interesting and dramatic, but which Eastwood manages. Lastly, as we all know the outcome, Eastwood uses a narrative back-and-forth that helps join up the before and after and maintain the dramatic impact of the 200 seconds of flight and 7 minutes of river rescue, which could have been lost in the 93 minutes of the film. The chopping could have been disruptive (nearly was), but was finely balanced in an effective and engaging way.

This will be my first and last review. Having read some of the negative comments written about this film I am more than ever convinced its just best to ignore reviews all together. I thought this was a superb film which delved into all aspects of this amazing true life incident. I am not a big Tom Hanks fan but I thought his portrayal of " Sully" was exceptional. Sometimes when you watch a movie you should look beyond the crash, bang wallop!!!

As soon as I found out that 'Eastwood' was going to be directing this ambitious reincarnation of the remarkable true story of US airways 1549, going mayday over New York, leaving the real possibility of another realtime airline disaster' similar to that of 9/11; I somehow knew that his refined handling expertise and decades of terrific film making, were going to elevate this one well above the standard fare we have been treated to over the last decade or so, in the re-emerging post 9/11 disaster film category.

A rapidly aging "Tom Hanks" as the main star, needs no introduction for this movie; after all, he was the brilliant limelight of the emotive and truly compelling "Castaway". Even in this thrilling plot, he always has an opportunity to enrich with his such likable manner, infectious character, sense of humour and convincing axemanship. It gives this tense drama such a believable and engaging perspective. This airline-film is largely centered on this realism aspect at all times, we all know Eastwood isn't into all the recent nonsense with overly-done dramatics, flashy narratives and workman-like cut and paste jobs; this film tells it as it is, a real and urgent development without going overboard.

I think some of the simulator scenes might have been a little overzealous given the running time, even a master such as 'Tom Hanks', might have featured a little too much airtime at times. The negatives overall seem rather trivial for such a rock-solid cut such as this. Taking into account the 12A BBFC classification, I found the film's sentiment overall is much more of a mature sitting than the certificate suggests. Never-the-less, casual watchers and airline enthusiasts alike are in for a satisfying treat with this one.
