Yet, it makes for compulsive reading, just like McCarthy's "The road" or "No country for old men" (Vann did pay tribute to McCarthy in a few radio interviews), or "Into the wild", which just like this book deals with the old fantasy of living outside civilisation.
The story is set in Alaska, but that is relatively irrelevant, as it deals with the inner soul rather than survival in a hostile environment.
The main character, Jim, was earlier developped in a similarly dark book, ominously called "Legends of a suicide", and also an essay in self-destruction, triggered by the suicide of the author's father, but whithout any hints of self-pity.
No need to detail the story, by now you have guessed there is no happy ending.
