I got this as a free offer - and I realise that this can either be an opening to an excellent author I didn't know about, or it can be 200 pages of wondering if it will get better! I am sorry to say that 'A Suitable Bride' falls more into the latter category. Fenella J Miller does write grammatically (hurrah!) and there are no particular errors which should have been 'subbed out' - so we have a good start. That she writes in English English is also great (although I came across one 'dove' when it should have been 'dived'!).

So what is wrong? The story is not powerful or original - but that is the case of many a Regency Romance and they are none the worse for it. I just felt I could not really warm to the characters. Miss Grace DuPont, her beloved Lord Bennett Sheldon and the supporting cast all felt a bit like cardboard cutouts. There was no empathy. So although I did read right through to the end, I can't say this was a great book. (I did like Grace's trio of doggy friends, though!)

There is no reason why others shouldn't find this to be a light read - but, for me, it is not near the top of of the genre.

I am so glad I didn't live in these times. This woman was amazing and her "suitor" who wasn't looking to marry fell for her natural ways. Society didn't rate here, but then society then was so cruel and hypocritical too. I do urge anyone to read it, it was great. Thank you.

I enjoyed the story as horses and dogs featured in it along with descriptions of country house life. Romance, sex and true love.

A Suitable Bride is the story of a highly independent woman, Grace, who has a fortune but no "blue blood". It was easy to like Grace and to emphasize with the predicament she found herself in; that of being a guest at a house party where she was forced to hide her origins. She has no intention of marrying into a ducal family and spending her married life being snubbed by the aristocracy, as being beneath them and instead has a plan to live independently. But she doesn't count on falling in love! This was a charming story which I thoroughly enjoyed. This is the first book I have read of Ms Miller but I don't think it will be the last. Looking forward to reading about the love lives of Bennett's siblings in future novels.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

For those of you who enjoy sparkling Regencies written by an author who understands the period well I can recommend A Suitable Bride.
When the Duke of Silchester’s heir decides he must marry a wealth lady from a suitable background, unsurprisingly there are no shortage of candidates for that position. Grace is not one of them but is forced by her middle-class, ambitious father into attending the duke’s house party. Grace plans to use the event to find a husband – just not the one that her father is hoping she will attract.
Bennett Sheldon finds himself either furious with Grace or fiercely protective of her independent spirit. What he must not do is fall in love with her and risk the duke’s ire. Naturally, he does just that, leaving him to choose between his family, his position within society’s ranks and the woman he has lost his heart to.
Lots of twists and turns in this insight into the way the English aristocracy protects its own.
A fun read.
