Review

The "fabulously glittery" Sugarlump is #1 in '10 titles not to miss. (The Bookseller’s Buyers Guide)

Children will revel in the glittery pages as they follow Sugarlump through his adventures and Lydia Monk's vibrant illustrations set off the rhyming text ideally. (Parents in Touch)

A reliably lovely read-aloud rhythm... Children will love Lydia Monk's illustrations. (The Daily Telegraph)

Julia Donaldon's rhyming text makes this an excellent read aloud story and Lydia Monks' illustrations combine colour, humour, photographic details, texture, plenty of glitter and some glimpses of familiar characters to keep the reader thoroughly entertained. This is a must-have picture book (The School Librarian)

Lots of rhyme and glitter on every page make for sparkly fun (The Sunday Express)

Our son already has 'What the Ladybird Heard' so I was really excited to get my hands on this for him. I was worried it might be a bit 'girly' with all the glitter, but for pre-schoolers I think it's just perfect, as it's brightly coloured fun glitter rather than pink princessy glitter. A great story, with Julia Donaldson's fantastic rhyming style. A really great book for your child's collection.

Julia Donaldson is always reliable, and Sugarlump and the Unicorn is no exception. My son and daughter loved this book, though neither were particularly interested in the use of glitter.

Both kids loved the presence of horses and unicorns in the book, and accepted the plot without question, but I did wonder as I read it why Sugarlump eventually settles with what she's given at the end of the book. Not that children's stories *have* to make sense, but the ending seemed a little odd to me.

I'd say that Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks' best book together is The Rhyming Rabbit. Buy that before you buy Sugarlump and the Unicorn, but if you enjoy it then by all means buy this one too.

I ordered this book for my Grandson who is obsessed with Unicorns. Although it is "sparkly" and some people may think it is aimed at little girls, I have to say my grandson loved it. Beautifully illustrated and excellent quality, I would recommend this for any young girl or boy. Ideal Christmas present!

Love this book and the author. I've read it several times to myself so far as it was purchsed to take to my grandchildren in Oz in March! I'm sure I'll know it by heart by then. Looking forward to reading it and enjoying the story with them.

We love this story! as big fans of Julia Donaldson i felt this was a safe choice, and we weren't disappointed :) The illustrations are lovely as always with lots to see and talk about, the story is about a rocking horse who keeps wishing for different things and has his wishes made true by a unicorn. This story rhymes as her other books do and with a happy ending-what's not to love?!

A touching little story from Julia Donaldson that is sure to please young children and their parents. The illustrations by Lydia Monks add to the joy of this book.

The story is about a rocking horse whose wishes for adventure are granted by a unicorn. Each wish, though, leaves the rocking horse unfulfilled. Fortunately, the rocking horse does eventually find happiness and a role he is suited to.

The story is a bit more reflective, and storyline a bit more subdued, than some of Donaldson other books. So if your little ones are impatient for instant excitement and adventure they might prefer The Snail and the Whale, Jack and the Flumflum Tree, Superworm, What The Ladybird Heard, or Room on the Broom.

This is a nice story.. but I think not as good as some of her others. I bought it for a 2 year old who loves to be read to.. but it is a little too long winded for her... still it is still a nice story with sparkly pages... she will probably love it in a month or two.
