Gives excellent sound quality when correctly used

I wanted this to record phone-ins to a podcast radio station. With a little bit of experimentation I was able to get first class sound quality on both sides of the conversation. You must use a simple analog wired telephone. Fix the device by its sticker directly behind the earpiece end of the receiver. Connect the 3 mm jack to the microphone socket on your digital sound recorder. The one I use is the Olympus DS-40 at its medium sensitivity setting, but no doubt any recorder would do. Try to keep the setup away from other electronic equipment that might create an electromagnetic field, such as routers, laptops and power supply units. The sound should be perfectly clear and free from background noise. It's an amazing device for the money!

Good for telephone recording

I needed to record telephone conversations for a PhD study. Initially I bought a more expensive device which plugged into the phone line - but the recording had a big variation in volume - my voice was loud and the other person was very feint. The recording accordingly could not be transcribed quickly and took hours of painstaking re-listening. I bought one of these on the off chance and it's great for what it is. The recording is a better, more balanced volume. I once found that the sticky cup fell off the handset but have improvised with a piece of sellotape to keep it in place. For a couple of pounds, this is a very cost effective solution where perfect sound quality is not essential.

Not just a microphone.

I have not used this one as a microphone to record through a telephone. I want to share another use for it and that is sound design. If you connect this to a dac and run it on top of any electrical device, it will pick up many interesting "electric" noises that can be used for sound design. I do not know if it works on a telephone but it works for the use I have described. It is a cheap built and will not take much abuse but it is very cheap and that is expected.

At last I've got something that works for recording mobile calls! But the device doesn't fully stick over the mike part of the phone, which means you don't get the best sound quality! It doesn't stick over landline devices earphone, however, though sticks in all the other bits of the 'phone!

This works on my mobile if I turn the speaker on which might annoy the person I have conversation with as it causes some echo. As far as the landline is concerned it does not work if you do not switch on the speaker. On my phone if I switch on the speaker then I can not use the hand receiver to speak as well so it is useless on my landline. The reason I ordered it was that I had one 40 years ago and it used to work. The phones did not have a loud speaker then.

I accidentally bought this without reading that it doesn't record audio unless it's connected to a phone, but I love it. I use it to record static and interference from devices, I'm having loads of fun with it! The suction cup is VERY sturdy and doesn't fall off at all.

Just received this item which was promptly delivered and securely packed and which works a treat. For this small amount of money I was prepared to take a chance - but it works just fine. I can hear the caller and myself as clearly as need be for the purposes of recording a telephone conversation. If used with the personal voice recorder I also bought from Amazon (see my review) you can record a conversation and transfer it to the computer and email it to wherever it's required. Excellent. Recommended.
