This is NOT a military history of the War of the Spanish Succession, which was fought in many theatres of operations: The Low Countries, Germany, Italy, the high seas and Spain itself. It concentrates exclusively on Spain and makes no reference to the other aspects of the war.
This is NOT a military history of the War of the Spanish Succession in the Iberian theatre. The military narrative consists of a single chapter, of 15 pages only.
This IS an academic analysis of the effect of the war on the Spanish economy and institutions. Not for the layman, who would be bored stiff. I gave it three stars to be fair, since the book's objectives & scope were not what I thought they were. Basically, I bought "the wrong book", because its title hints at something else and because Amazon does not provide an article description.
To help other readers not to make the same mistake, and to know what they are buying, I am adding excerpts of the book's front lap ... which tell you what it is.
"Rather than simply provide a detailed narrative of the war, Mr. Kamen demonstrates its impact on Spanish society. He confines the military history to an early chapter and devotes the bulk of the book to illustrating the war's influence on the formulation of royal policies, the organization of government and the military, the finances of the Crown, industrial and mercantile activity, the nobility, and the relationship between the Castilian Crown and the peripheral states of Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia".Read more ›
