Biographies often fall into the trap of simply rehashing newspaper articles, including a few interviews already in the public domain, and padding it out with apocryphal stories - many of which were issued by publicists with little regard for the truth.Solid research is often sadly lacking. Not so here. "Success Story" is an academic and erudite work, lovingly crafted. It will be regarded as the standard work of reference on the great Anthony Newley.
But this is no dry-as-dust listing of facts and figures.Every film, theatre show,TV appearance, and recording is accompanied by the most entertaining background information and trivia. You will find yourself dipping into it randomly and often, even after you have read the whole book.
It is a fitting tribute to Britain's finest theatrical performer and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

How wonderful to finally have this, not just in print, but in MY hands. It is, as others have so rightly said, a definitive work. But it's more than that. It's a thundering good read. Here is a work that tells you everything you never knew that you thought you knew about the gloriously talented Mister Newley. As a reference work for the generations that come after me, it is invaluable. As a source of entertainment for the here and now, it is a joy. It is, quite clearly, written with love and affection for the 'Man Who Made You Laugh' but the book refuses to gloss over the downsides, the upsets, the lows and the disappointments. Here we have a real treasure. Mr. Goodhead has gone to enormous lengths to compile this piece and I hope that he can hear the applause that is greeting it. Not least, it is solid in its facts and its chronolgy and, just for once my friends, we can have a work that is bereft of 'pluggery' and 'buffery' and 'gloss'. What we have is the facts, ma'am... just the facts. Huzzah!

I received this book a week ago and I couldn't put it down. I am a longtime fan of Anthony Newley. I knew he had been in some movies prior to his stage performances in "Stop the World" and "The Roar of the Greasepaint". However, I never knew he had such a long history in British films and television prior to these two shows. Even though I am only half way through this book, the knowledge that I have gleaned already is astounding. This book is a must read for all Newley fans.
A special thanks to Paul Goodhead for keeping the memory alive of a great entertainer.
