Review

'Dr Trevor Day adopts a holistic approach to help you develop specific disciplinary ways of thinking and writing, together with transferable life skills that employers are increasingly demanding from graduates.' Associate Professor Suki Ekaratne, University of Hong Kong

'Whether clarifying the reasons for formal academic writing, its nature and conventions, or explaining critical thinking and the art of composition, Day's practical experience and craftsmanship combine to make this a book that students and academics alike can return to time and again and never fail to learn something or find inspiration.'

Carol Matthews, Learning Development Manager, University of Bedfordshire

'… this book is well worth reading for its broad overview of academic writing and for its wide range of tips, advice and practical examples to help students to develop their academic voice and academic writing skills. After reading this book, students will be equipped to tackle their university writing projects with confidence and fluency. Consequently, it is recommended for any undergraduate or postgraduate student especially if they are new to academic writing.'

Kathy Greethust, Staff Development Consultant, Oxford Brookes University

I'm using this book as a teacher now, but I wish I'd had it when I was an undergraduate. It's succinct, accessible, and arranged in easy-to-find sections so that you can hone in on exactly what you want.

As well as explaining the structure of essays, dissertations, reports etc., this book also tackles the psychology of writing - how to get through writer's block, and how to use freewriting to release your creativity. It gives advice on how to research and how to give presentations, and it even covers paragraph structure - without which your essays will go to sand.

This is an excellent guide, informed both by the author’s scholarly knowledge of the field, and by his extensive experience as a teacher himself.

As someone who has taught academic writing in several universities, I know that many students are baffled by the writing process, and unsure how to approach it. This book offers them clear answers. Starting with a chapter on the nature and purposes of academic writing, it leads the reader through all the different processes involved: understanding the assignment; finding an appropriate voice; researching; structuring; composing; and citing and referencing. The main points are summarized at end of each chapter, and further reinforced by a series of practical exercises.

The comprehensive scope of the book, and the thoroughness with which all the different aspects are explored, make it an invaluable resource for students at every stage of their university career, from undergraduate to PhD – and for their teachers. Highly recommended.
