As well as explaining the structure of essays, dissertations, reports etc., this book also tackles the psychology of writing - how to get through writer's block, and how to use freewriting to release your creativity. It gives advice on how to research and how to give presentations, and it even covers paragraph structure - without which your essays will go to sand.
As someone who has taught academic writing in several universities, I know that many students are baffled by the writing process, and unsure how to approach it. This book offers them clear answers. Starting with a chapter on the nature and purposes of academic writing, it leads the reader through all the different processes involved: understanding the assignment; finding an appropriate voice; researching; structuring; composing; and citing and referencing. The main points are summarized at end of each chapter, and further reinforced by a series of practical exercises.
The comprehensive scope of the book, and the thoroughness with which all the different aspects are explored, make it an invaluable resource for students at every stage of their university career, from undergraduate to PhD – and for their teachers. Highly recommended.
