Amazon Review

Salamanders exist, obviously. Well, Andrew Harman would like you to suspend your disbelief for a few hours, and with a little help from his friends in genetic engineering the mythological flame-dwelling beasties just might come a-calling. Camford, from electrified golf club, to the local expert in vegetable arrangement, via the unscrupulous estate agent with the fraudulent cellar, is about to get rudely jolted out of sleepy suburban slumber. You could blame the Fairy Queen, if you believed in her, but with the world about to end you probably won't worry about that too much. Obviously someone has to do something, and who better than Laurel Miles, the eccentric but dedicated rainbow warrior with a head-full of Amazonian ant music?

Andrew Harman is the author of such popular comic fantasies as Frogs of War, 101 Damnations and The Sorcerer's Appendix. His many fans will appreciate that The Suburban Salamander Incident features his characteristic mix of love-it or loath-it puns, wordplay, silly jokes, clever jokes, quirky characters and wayward plotting. It's a book for a long train journey, or to cheer you up through a dose of flu. It won't change your world, but it will raise a smile, and even the occasional splutter from all but the most stony-faced. Afterwards you might enjoy being flabbergasted by Tom Holt's Snow White and the Seven Samurai, stare with amazement at David Garnett's Bikin Planet, and indulge in Sex, Drugs and Sausage Rolls, courtesy of Robert Rankin. --Gary S. Dalkin
