Trench and Hillman's London Under London used to be the only book on the world below the streets of London. But that had errors and is now very out of date: for example the construction of the Jubilee Line extension is a recnt developemnt not included in their book.
Antony Clayton's book is arranged thematically (rivers, rail, secret tunnels, etc.) and is immensely readable and eye opening. London is so much more than what you can see on the surface. If you want to get a complete picture of London, buy this.

Book is very good. 264 pages, with about 116 photos (old & recent, monochrome & colour) & about 89 detailed sketches (mostly old, pre photo era, some monochrome, some in colour). There are also about 12 maps. Seems to cover everything, from roman remains to Crossrail.

Chapter 1: Exploring the Subterranean City (Geology, Jack Cade's Cavern, Early Archaeology, Burial Grounds & Cemeteries & Catacombs, Crypts & Vaults & Cellars & Basements, Ice Houses & Canals, Railway Tunnels, Moleman of Hackney).

Chapter 2: Buried Waters (Lost Rivers, The Fleet, The Tyburn, The Westbourne, The Walbrook, Lost Rivers South of the Thames, Lost Rivers Revived, London's Water Supply, Thames Water Ring Main, Wells, Sewers, Victorian Pumping Stations, Post Modern Pumping Stations, Thames Tideway Tunnel).

Chapter 3: Pipes and Tunnels (Gas Supply, London Hydraulic Power Company, Electricity, The Michaelangelo of Deptford, New Power tunnels, Victorian Utility Subways, Early Telegraph System, Cable, Limehouse Link, Brunels' thames Tunnel, Tower Subway, More Tunnels under the Thames, Blackwall Road Tunnel).

Chapter 4: Secret Places (Subterranean Life during Wartime, Deep-Level Shelters, Goodge Street and the Tubeway Armies, Underground at War, Citadels & Rotundas, Carry on Broadcasting, Cabinet War Rooms, Padlock & 'Forward Area' Citadels, RAF Uxbridge, Telephone Exchanges & Cable Tunnels, Kingsway, Secret Subterranean Christmas, Subterranean Speculations, Pindar & Cobra, Northwood Bunker, Secret Services & Modern Security Precautions, CCTV).

This is a well-researched and extremely readable work which details the "hidden" London beneath our feet. The author obviously has a great gift for imparting knowledge in an accessible and illuminating way.

I found Subterranean City a fascinating and enjoyable read. It is nicely illustrated, although would be better with some good maps of the tunnel networks and locations described. I personally would also have preferred slightly more focus on the structures themselves rather than the reasons for them being built (there are some long historical diversions in places).

This is a very readable book on all that happens under London's streets and buildings. In many ways an up-to-date version of 'London under London', but not quite so detailed and easier to read.

Really interesting read, you cant imagine how much stuff is under London! Some stuff is used, disused, re-used, not finished... the list goes on. The book is really up to date detailing some of the most recent subterranean projects underway as well as those from many years ago.

One of the most interesting books I have ever bought, a great read.
