Book Description

Part of the Cambridge Manuals of Science and Literature series, this small 1913 volume by Clement Reid was among the first attempts to survey the ancient layers of land surfaces and forests that lie submerged along the coasts and estuaries of Britain. Reid's consummate work shows that they are full of interest. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I bought this book as I am interested in several aspects that it covers - archaeology, geology, geography, and the mysterious appearance of sunken, petrified forests at low tide along the British coasts in particular. Clement Reid was way ahead of his time (ca. 1910), guessing at things he could have in no way proven with the technology of his time, but has since been discovered. His book is a must-read for students or amateurs of any of these fields. It is perhaps a bit technical for those not interested in the sciences, but well worth the read for those who are.

This was the first, real survey of all the submerged forests around the UK coast. It does not cover 'Doggerland', which it regards as too ancient. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating read, and gives you some idea how much low lying land has 'gone under'. Best read together with a modern work as, of course, this book lack carbon dating...
