If you love rock romances you will want to read Ashley and Paul’s story because this author knows how to write a rocker book. I loved all the behind the scenes at concerts and how these rock gods were able to get all these people/fans to fall at their feet. For me the onstage persona and the real person differences were insightful. It really did open up the world of what a rock star’s music meant to them and how they could incorporate a family at the same time into the crazy life they lead out on tour. I can’t wait to read more on the other guys in the band because I’m now hooked.
I received this book as an ARC for a freely given and honest review.
All Ashley Jacobs wants to do is forget about the Get Rocked! in Vegas Festival and get on with her life. Unfortunately, the one night stand she spent in the arms of British band, Style Strike’s bad boy bass player. Paul Gray makes that simple wish impossible. She’s brought home more than memories.
Toni Kenyon immediately made me smile when she apologetically explained that she was a New Zealand writer and therefore called a sidewalk footpaths and used a “u” in colour and flavour and a s in apologise. This I felt was a good sign as although I now skate over it, as a linguistics graduate, I do sometimes feel the pain in American spelling. This isn’t a debate over which is correct (I’ll save that for another day), but it made me very happy.
Back to the book – so in short, Ashley and Paul meet in Vegas two months before the book is written. They have sex and at the start of the book, Ashley discovers despite taking precautions that she has ended up pregnant. It turns out that both Ashley and Paul haven’t been able to get each other out of their heads since that night and although Ashley is adamant that she doesn’t want to be with a rock star, hence she didn’t get in touch with him before finding out she’s pregnant, she realises she has to.
Ashley has a series of slightly unfortunate and yet entirely predicable events when she finds out she’s pregnant. As she’s started a new job/internship, having horrible morning sickness causes her to lose her job and she ends up getting in touch with Paul mainly because she thinks she should tell him (although she’s mainly out of other options too).
Needless to say, they meet up in her hometown, she tells him she’s pregnant and all hell breaks lose.
I usually stay away from the pregnancy drama romance novels, but as it had a rock star in it, I thought I’d give it a try. I’ll also say this is a short book and really on the boundary of what I’ll read – usually I stay away from anything shorter than this because how much can I get to know a character in under 200 pages? The novel took me about 2 1/2 hours to finish in total.
I think it had a lot of potential, but I would say that because it was such a short read, it felt very much like I didn’t get the chance to know the characters before it concluded. It deals with a couple of big issues: accidental pregnancy, a women having to give up her career, a man panicking about the responsibility he’s faced with having a baby with a near perfect stranger, the pressure of unexpected (and expected) fame on relationships and the prospect of bringing up a child on the road.
However, none of them have a chance to develop. Ashley and Paul are both besotted with each other, but I can’t quite understand why because I don’t see it myself. I wasn’t given an opportunity to discover why either of them were so great. They both seemed… nice but not much more.
Sitting by the pool on holiday, this might have been a better read, but as much as I wanted to love it – I just didn’t.
This author has written a brilliant storyline, which had me hooked and intrigued from the very beginning. I cannot wait to read more of this series, and this author has certainly been added to my favourite and 1.click lists. Amazing work Toni!!
This was a great book.
Paul is the bass player for an up and coming band. He is a bit of a bad boy and enjoys the attention he gets from the groupies. That is until he meets Ashley at a festival in Vegas.
Ashley wanted a quiet life, that all changed when she spent one night with Paul and came home with more than just a Vegas hangover…. she’s pregnant.
Ashley has to decide if she should tell Paul about the baby and if she does how will he react?
Can these two overcome the obstacles thrown at them after one night together?
