This is a very exciting and glamorous read which is perfect for children aged approx 12+. It involves Finn, who is the stunt double for his enemy, Blake.
As well as the exciting world of the movies, we have the cast and crew heading for Papua New Guinea, where Agatha Novak begins to push Finn to do more and more dangerous stunts. Her reasons become clear as you read on, introducing an element of mystery and excitement into exotic location and glamorous world of film making. This novel has a lot of background on movie making and stunts, which made the novel interesting for my son and the storyline kept him gripped. However, there is also a lot of reality in the novel; with pushy mothers and Finn facing real danger. A great start to a new series, with an interesting background and good characters.
Finn narrates, very entertainingly too. Whilst grateful for work, he would much rather it not this - he to be made up to look like the very one he detests. Why should Blake be acclaimed for daredevil stunts he did not perform? To add to problems, manic director Novak insists no safety devices be worn (after all, little things like plunging from Tower Bridge into the Thames cannot be that hard). When cast and crew move on to a remote part of Papua New Guinea problems multiply....
A lively telling, full of action and fun. (By the way, Novak may seem completely over the top, but she is not far removed from certain early directors where cast were treated almost like cattle, and lives occasionally lost.) Characterization is lively (Finn's doting mother particularly). Amongst a range of attractions are hints of romance with colleague Mawi, very real danger when confronted by a tribe with a grudge.
What then for Finn? Will he end up in hospital, whilst Blake basks in yet more glory? Not only the intended young teen audience will be eager to find out.
Far-fetched most certainly, particularly towards the end, but welcome here an immensely enjoyable read.
Tamsin Cooke has created a very addictive, page-turning read with this book that I can see many children really enjoying. What starts as a very safe story, ends up a lot darker and scarier as it goes along and Tamsin really managed to transition this throughout the story really well. It’s natural and really has the reader on the edge of their seat – exactly what you want from such a thrilling adventure book.
There is a vast array of characters in this book but what I love is how Tamsin has made it quite difficult to know who to trust. You’re constantly second guessing things and more wonderful was that I ended up fooled by a few characters. I’d say who but I’m not spoiling anything! My favourite characters were the four teenagers; Finn, Anna, Blake and Mawi. They were all unique and fascinating characters to follow and definitely made this book more interesting.
Stunt Double was a thrilling, heart-racing adventure book that I really enjoyed. It would suit a ten to fourteen year old well and reminded me of action thriller books like Robert Muchamore‘s Cherub series and Anthony Horrowitz‘s Alex Ryder series. It was fast-paced, action packed and intense in all the ways you could want it to be. Not to mention it was also kind of emotional too. Also the ending has also definitely got me very intrigued! I would absolutely recommend this book to others, especially if you like action adventure stories!

"It’s definitely a page turner. Exciting but also like real life. I would recommend it to any girl or boy in Year 5 or 6 if they are good readers"
