The Stuhrling Original Story

With dedication to the heritage of Swiss watchmaking, Stuhrling Original timepieces appeal to the most discriminating taste at reasonable prices. The company has roots dating back to the 1800s when Switzerland emerged as the global leader in watchmaking. Stuhrling Original remains committed to its mission of preserving the high standards set in Switzerland manufacturing all of their fine timepieces in their Swiss-owned factory. Each and every model conveys an inimitable story with extraordinary style. You'll find heirloom selections for both men and women that even the most astute watch collector will cherish and admire.

In the workshops of Stuhrling Original, the unit specializing in mechanical movements, component selection, assembly, lubrication, adjustment and testing creates horological wonders entirely under vigilant attention of Swiss ownership and supervision. It is these workshops that produce the mechanical engines that are famous for meeting the highest existing criteria in there category. Starting with the main plate, the assembly process is performed in several consecutive stages up until anchoring the balance spring, which sets the watch into motion. Assembling a Stuhrling Original mechanical automatic movement comprises no less than 30 checkpoints, spread throughout the assembly process. Adjusting the angle of lift of the pallets, centering the balance-spring, poising the balance are just a few examples of these checkpoints; of which all are designed to enhance the performance of each movement. The movement must meet no less than seven criteria, including a mean variation in rate which is the highest standard in the industry in its class.

Stuhrling Original cases are distinguished by their technical complexity, their high-end aesthetic appeal and the quality of their finish. The watch cases are made from antimagnetic 316L surgical grade stainless steel, an extremely sophisticated alloy designed to stand up to intensive use. The rough parts, known as "middlecases" are blanked from a metal bar using a high-performance press. They then undergo eight successive stamping operations of a strength increasing gradually from 20 to 85 tons. Before each swaging operation, the middlecase is refired at a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius, so as to temporarily reduce the hardness to a total stamping pressure of more than 400 tons. Finishing the cases then calls for fifteen polishing operations, all performed by hand alternating with nine baths guaranteeing immaculate cleanliness. Other components of the cases, such as rotating bezels or rider tabs also require a meticulous finish. The components of the cases are finally assembled by hand and rigorously tested.

Each Stuhrling Original dial has been designed to enable optimal read-off at a glance, while adding an element of artistic design. Stuhrling Original's dials are blanked from a brass plate and two cylindrical feet are soldered below to ensure security with the movement. Polishing operations, creating special effects through the use of vintage hydraulic German machines, and electroplating are just some of the more than forty operations required to make most Stuhrling Original dials. The transparent protective coating is applied in an immaculately clean environment before the various inscriptions are transfer printed using a gelatin pad which takes an impression from an inked block. On many of the dials the hour markers are either individually applied by hand or embossed into the dial and then topped with a special dye. The application of Super Luminova is performed by artisans with a nozzle pen connected to a high-pressure pipe which calls for intense concentration. Once finished, each dial undergoes careful aesthetic scrutiny under extreme magnification, as well as technical testing, to ensure it complies with all predefined dimensions and specifications.

Through meticulous labour, rigorous testing and examination of each timepiece by expert horologists, the vision of the Stuhrling Original timepiece is brought to life inside our workshops, where...

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 9 July 2010

This watch is everything you could want and more. I have a smaller wrist size, and will not buy a watch with a dial size over 44mm. This watch comes in at 42mm, and is perfectly balanced with my wrist. It doesn't come across as too small, or too big.

I generally stick with only metal bracelet watches, and this is my first leather band watch. The band is comfortable, and breathes well. It's definitely not for a huge wrist individual though. I have it on the third pin position on the watch band. So someone who generally has the wrist size to support a 50mm watch or thereabouts will likely not find this band a good fit.

I was initially a little worried about the large crown size, but in person it's a nice size. The pictures on the site don't really do the watch justice. In person, every detail is beautiful and clear and even with all the dials, (Month, Date, Day, and 24-hour) it only took about 30 seconds to get everything set correctly.

I got a phenomenal deal on this watch, and couldn't be happier with it. It's sophisticated look lends itself to a fine suit, or something slightly above casual wear.

Couldn't be happier.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful accessory that fails as a timepiece 17 Jan. 2011
By Johnnycakes - Published on
It is a beautiful watch. It looks great on and people love it. If you wear watches as just an accessory, like a ring or a bracelet, then you will be happy with this product. As others have said, it is made in China, so it is not Swiss and does not have their quality.

As a timepiece, it fails for two reasons. First, since the majority of the face is silver and the hands are silver, it can be hard to read. Extremely hard to read if you don't have 20/20 vision or the light is a little low. If you are in a dim light setting, like a nice restaurant, a company meeting with a presentation going, or at dusk/dawn, it can be impossible to read. At least the other model of this watch has blue hands. It would have been helpful if they had chosen a different color.

The second reason - and for me the reason to knock them down 2 stars - is that it does not keep time accurately. I understand that this watch does not have a battery and will not keep running for months on its own. I get that, I really do. However, even after winding the watch and wearing it for 4 days straight, I keep having to adjust the time, day, and date setting. I left the watch in a drawer on Friday evening - again, after winding the watch every morning and wearing it on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday - and by Sunday it was 3 hours behind, and 1 day/date behind and the second hand was still ticking. Sorry, but I don't think I should have to daily babysit a watch or spend money on a "winding" case so that I can wear it without having to reset the time and day/date every single time. If manually winding it and having the motion wind it cannot keep it on time for more than a day or two, it is useless as a watch.

So, as an accessory, it looks great and I will probably wear it ONLY for dressy functions that happen occasionally. Then, I don't mind having to set the watch. It won't be worn daily as I don't have the patience to have to set the watch every morning.

This was a hard purchase, especially after reading all the reviews. This is not a cheap watch, so that didn't help, either. Despite all the negative reviews, I couldn't resist the elegant look of this watch. The only reason I would hesitate again is that it IS made in China. I'm not a time-piece expert, so I cannot comment on the Swiss movement, but what I can say is that my watch, as long I wear it or keep it wound, has kept very accurate time. The one negative you need to keep in mind is the color of the is definitely hard to see in low light. I don't work in low lighting so I wasn't concerned about that aspect.

I don't wear this watch everyday...I wear it just about everywhere accept to work. So it's worn maybe a few days a week. I've hit it on metal items, doors, and other material and I have yet to see any nicks or scratches. The band seems to be very durable and is holding up wonderfully. If you let it sit, you will lose time and you will have to reset the other I wind the watch everyday unless I'm wearing it. If I'm wearing it, all functions remain very accurate. Only 4-stars because of the difficulty reading the piece in low lighting.

Stuhrling has a web site with lots of information for it's costomers. I suggest you look at it and decide if this brand is for you. As for me...I just bought another piece for work-wear.

After using this watch now for over a year, I'm encountering some very real mechanical/movement issues that are making me regret this purchase. I notice the second hand getting stuck, or not working. A watch of this 'supposed' caliber should be holding up much better than it is. It is CONSTANTLY AND CONSISTANTLTY losing time, even with repeated windings. I'm unclear why. (?) Does my arm have to be in constant perpetual movement for the mechanism to work?! It should not have to be. Why does the second hand stop of its' own accord? I am thoroughly disappointed that this beautiful time piece, that cost over $100, is now nothing more than a waste of money and a drawer filler!

I recently ordered this timepeice from stuhrling because I wanted I new watch that woudl look really sharp with a suit and tie, which I have to wear to work everyday.

After much research, I decieded on this one because It looked really nice, and had several features that I could only find in much more expensive brands, ( like the scratch-resistant sapphire crystals on the front and the back). futhermore, I had never had a mechanical watch, and always wanted one.

The first thing I noticed when I received the watch is that the pictures on Amazon do not do this watch justice. It is absolutely beautiful and complex, especially considering the price. I was also happy to learn that even with an Automatically winding watch, you can still wind it manually, so it will still continue to work even if your not doing a lot of moving around during the day. I haven't had it for very long, but so far it has also kept excellent time.

My only complaint is that my wrists are not that large, and could only get my buckle to the second loop on the strap, so those with large wrists may not be able to wear this model.

In short, if your considering purchasing a dress watch, but don't want to break the bank buying it, you should definitely put this stuhrling watch at the top of your list.

For the price, I believe this watch is a steal!
The case that it arrives in is quite attractive, and it only gets better when you open it and find the watch strapped in (along with cleaning cloth and date adjustment tool)
Setting the time is very easy, with the crown for 12/24 hour clock and the three buttons/push pins for the day, month, and date.
Genuine leather strap is nice, though I wish there were a metal band option (I prefer those) But I'm sure if I really want to I can purchase one separately and put it on.
The balance wheel and escapement are clearly visible from the bottom of the watch, and I've spent a lot of time simply watching it.
The crown is a little large for my taste, but the rest of the watch makes up for it.

Beautiful watch
Great Price **Or is it??
Pretty Box

the number of "available" watches is continuously changing, as well as the "list price" and sale price.
When I purchased it said there were two available, list price was $930, and sale price was $127
It's a good watch, but. I. don't. like. being. lied. to.

also, my watch runs fast, every now and then I'll find myself having to wind it back a few minutes to be on the right time.
