Product Description

Review

'Its strength is in providing a general survey of mainstream linguistics in palatable, easily manageable and logically organised chunks. The chapter divisions allow for considerable flexibility, which has proved particularly important after recently restructuring our courses and reorganising the order in which to cover the topics.' Nigel Musk, University of Linkoping

'One of the most accessible and entertaining introductions available. Newly updated with a wealth of material for practice and discussion.' Stephen Matthews, University of Hong Kong

'Genuinely introductory, well suited for undergraduates … Yule's crisp and thought-provoking presentation works well for a wide range of students.' Elise Morse-Gagne, Tougaloo College

'The latest edition of this text contains the most extensive changes to date, and all have served to make a good textbook even better … the book is concise, thorough, and succinct. It is also extremely well-written … It is difficult to express how much information this author covers in so few words, while being so informative. There is no fluff in this book; every single sentence counts, every word is important.' The LINGUIST List

This book is unusual in its breadth and would serve as the most complete introduction to language study in terms of ground covered. If you are studying any specific area of language you'll probably be frustrated by the lack of depth, but I highly recommend this book on the grounds of clarity and wide-angle view. I cannot name another book which covers topics as varied as primate language ability, syntax, pragmatics, semantics, grammar, morphology, phonetics, neuroscience (in relation to language) and lots more - I'm only scratching the surface - all inside a single book. If you are setting out on a mission to get to grips with every aspect of language, well, just look at the contents! The only problem is that to take each topic covered any further you would need to buy another book specifically on that topic, which would entail buying at least a dozen books.

Firstly, I must say that I've never written a review for a book before. But I thought I would make an exception for George Yule's brilliant guide to the study of language. The tasks and study questions are challenging and genuinely mean that you consolidate your learning from the previous chapter. The online pdf intended as a guide to the tasks makes self-study possible.

Yule has a clear and engaging style yet doesn't patronize his readers (which is quite a skill in itself). He also includes a number of pop culture references which you may love or loathe. Personally, I've found that it makes the book more readable and captivating. It is well structured and concise and the layout and print is attractive.

However, if you have any kind of serious prior learning in the field of linguistics, this book is probably not for you. It is intended as an introduction and that is precisely what it is.

Very informative and well written, easy to read, book. Extremely helpful if studying an english degree as the basics are all there. If you are looking for specifics that are in-depth, maybe not the best choice but for more general readers wanting a bit of everything, very good.
