Product Description

Product Description

Freshman student Laura, the stunning Déborah François (Populaire, The Page Turner), is struggling to make ends meet, despite holding down a part-time job. Desperate for cash, she answers an Internet ad: Joe, 57, seeks female student for tender moments. One hundred euros an hour. Just this once, she promises herself. But what should have been a one-off becomes a downward spiral, as Laura grows gradually more reliant on her illicit second income. Finding herself in a new bed every night, Laura s situation becomes increasingly dangerous.

From uncompromising writer-director Emmanuelle Bercot (Clement) and based on the notorious memoir of a former student prostitute, STUDENT SERVICES (Mes chères études) is as compelling as it is shocking.

Deborah Francis is quite beautiful both to look at and in her acting; she is a talented actress which this film shows to the full, as the film is only really about her. However, the story is poor. Her character is conflicting as she is both pathetic and aggressive. To say that the viewer does not really engage with the character is the bottom line, because you really do not care what happens too much towards the end of the film. Oh and the film in my opinion is not erotic although there is some nudity. Also there is a lack of continuity in the way in which the scenes are put together and this is rather irritating. Nevertheless if you like Deborah Francis the film is worth a view.

I generally enjoyed this film - based on the 'true/shocking' revelations of a (French) female university student who turned to the world's oldest profession to help finance her way thru school. It is, perhaps, the 'expose' angle of the movie that slants the general tenor of the piece towards a negative vibe - as the viewer is introduced to the story's lead character, Laura, and follows her down a path of personal denigration as she barters her youthful body for some spending cash & millennial trinkets.

The 'shock value' of the source book from which the screenplay was derived is based on the (purported) 'epidemic' levels of prostitution engaged in by female college students to make ends meet - so it is not surprising that the director has seemingly gone out of their way to make sure that the sexual 'pay for play' activities of the film's star are not made to look 'enjoyable'. In this, at least, they have managed to succeed!

The lead actress, Deborah Francois, IS lovely - in just the right way to provide a vulnerable heroine for the sordid tale... and she sure doesn't appear to like what she's doing in the sexual realm - so much so - that after a while I found the plot to become rather disingenuous and dis-engaging. Despite many scenes where Ms Francois fully reveals her attractive body and participates in sexual congress with a variety of sorta 'flawed' male individuals - there is nothing arousing about any of it. Could the girl be any more 'bored' & repulsed?! It really makes one wonder why her one repeat customer 'Joe' keeps coming back for more... or why she sticks it out for as long as she does.

Despite a good deal of flesh on display, there is nothing in the least erotic about this account of a student who finds herself in financial difficulties and goes into amateur prostitution to solve that. The lead actress does a good job of conveying her phsyical awkwardness over the whole thing, and also her joy at getting money. Difficult to believe that an evidently intelligent young woman would be quite so naive about certain things as shown in the film.

I was incredibly surprised by the acting in this film it was, well"GUTSY"a fantastic performance from both Deborah Francois and Alain Cauchi. We all (most of us ) have to work during college or uni but only a few have the guts to sell our bodies ,not something we would consider but when its all you have left and your back against the wall (so to speak) Laura took a very big breath and jumped into the hitherto unknown world of vice.A life ,after the initial shock ,she found easy until a sudden a huge dose of depravity wakes her up and she learns life is not a bowl of roses. She then flees to Paris but is it all over?Remarkably this is a very real and a very true story which makes it even more harrowing. My little brother built roads to help him through uni not quite sure what my big sister did?!!?

This movie really removes any romantic ideas about prostitution. Dead cold without hearts involved.
I`m not tempted to watch this one again, cause it`s just a tragic and unpleasant scenario.
I give it 3 stars cause it could serve as a eyeopener.

This is not a film for people who might be looking for soft core entertainment. This is, however, a film that the French seem to be good at producing, time and time again.
If you're a parent of teenage kids, particularly girls, with the expectation and desire to see that they do well in their education and perhaps go onto university, which may take them well away from the safety of their home, you will definitely not want to learn that they're having to acquire extra curriculum skills and activities, just to be able to pay their bills / rent and buy food. This film attempts to show that once someone discovers the lure of easy money, that they're sucked in to more and more encounters with men with unknown sexual kinks / fetishes.

Even in the pre student loan era when I was at University, one heard of girls who 'paid their way' and supplemented often meagre grants by taking jobs as 'topless waitresses' or strippers, whether or not things went further than mere visual entertainment I do not know. One student of astrophysics was so successful that she was the only girl I knew that ran a brand new sports car (and she ended up with a good degree too). The subject of this film therefore comes as no amazing new revelation to me although the girl here does go straight 'on the game'. Well acted, a banal plot .....but the 'scenery' is quite attractive!
