HASH(0x9187ed98) out of 5 stars Exceptional Performance 3 Jan. 2012
By John G. Gleeson Sr. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Maria di Rohan was Donizetti's third to last opera, to be followed by Dom Sebastien and Caterina Cornaro. It was written when the maestro was at the peak of his musical composition skills, but before he descended into the mental condition which ended his life. It is a tale, as are many of Donizetti's operas, of love gone wrong, when Maria, who is married to Enrico (the baritone) seeks the help of a former lover, Riccardo (the tenor) to help Enrico, who is in trouble over a duel he fought with a relative of Cardinal Richelieu. Of course, those old feelings rise to the surface and create the dramatic tension that moves the plot forward.

All I can say about the score is that is flawless, and exceptionally melodic. It is well performed in this 1997 recording, which affords the listener with a technically perfect reproduction.

Maria is sung by Edita Gruberova, of whom much has been written. To me, her coloratura soprano voice was made for this kind of bel canto role and she brings it off without a hitch. Runs, trills, crescendos, decrescendos and those lovely floating pianissimi abound.

Riccardo is sung by Octavio Arevalo, with whom I was unfamiliar before hearing this recording He, too, has the lyric tenor voice to execute the vocally demading role he sings nearly perfectly.

Enrico is Ettore Kim, who has sung with Gruberova on other Nightingale Classics. He does an excellent job is this role, and in the others I have heard.

The packaging is a no frills version of the earlier boxed set and has no libretto, although there is a little pamphlet with an article about the opera's background. Opera Rara has recently released this opera, but I have not heard it yet. If they follow course, there will be a very informative, scholarly essay on the opera and a libretto and a hefty price tag. To thoroughly enjoy this magnificent work, you need go no further than this offering however.

Buy it and experience Donizetti's music in an exceptionally rendered performance.

HASH(0x912f3ee8) out of 5 stars Beautiful Melodious 21 Jun. 2012

If you like Italian bell-canto music, you will enjoy this opera of Donizetti. His genius seems to be in the variety of melodies he utilizes from one opera to the next. It is not a studio recording and there is no libretto. But, the plot is considerably good for opera stories and is not difficult to follow. However, I would recommend that listeners be provided with a libretto.

HASH(0x912413fc) out of 5 stars well, im glad i don't need a libretto for an italian opera... 4 July 2013
By jose - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
the first reviewer is kindly providing the same information that comes in the credits booklet in the flat double disc jewel case. no libretto, but i don't need any librettos for any operas unless is russian, i speak all the other languages where operas, operetas & zarzuelas are composed into. anyways de plots in belcanto operas i repeat all the time, are irrelevant. youre just listening to beautiful singing. the music & librettos of this operas are subjugated to the vocal display, & the singers prefer to hit notes than pronounciate correctly. i love music & singing, not irrelevant soap operas. gruberova once again gives us a display of her singing talent & she's in very good company, with very powerful singers. i just got her lucia (gruberova/shicoff/bonynge) & i think shes fantastic. since "maria" is not an opera regularly recorded, & the other clean alternative is the expensive set from opera rara. this being a live recording, is a concert version without innecesary noises, clapping & very good stereo sound (not spacial). almost like a studio recording. for details of the opera itself, go to the first reviewer, he copied an abrigated version of what's written in the booklet. very recomended for belcanto lovers & very well priced. if you need libretto get the older edition , that comes complete in a box with libretto, but is more pricy. i'm really glad i don't need librettos to listen to operas. i can take good advantage of all the budget series, who takes the libretto out to make more unexpensive editions
