Struck by lightning is an engaging, compelling, multi-layered masterpiece, brilliantly written and portrayed by Mr Colfer, who has a knack of making you have an emotional connection with the characters but it is no comedy it is quite literally a tragedy.

It is said that you should write about what you know and I do truly hope that that this is not the case here, for the optimistic view point aside that would make Mr Colfer a truly tortured soul that has suffered too much of the darkness of life and I would not wish that on my worst enemy.

Not since Shakespeare’s Titus have I been left more disturbed after watching a movie, the light hearted premise aside the story holds within it the dark themes of rejection, abandonment, alcoholism, the disintegration of the family, the shallow and falseness of people, the decline of society, emotional abuse, the loss of hope, dreams and your own mind, being trapped, betrayal and in the end the complete futility of life.

All that being said I would recommend you watch this movie with your significant other as you will need a shoulder to cry on.

I have waited ages to watch this film I already own the book and the audio book, which I can also recommend, the audio book is narrated by the author and is really well done capturing the listener and taking you on a journey with main character Carson.
The film lived up to my expectations Chris Colfer is a young actor/screen writer who is one to watch, he pulls no punches and makes his character both vunerable and complex, I was in tears by the end of the film, always a good indicator of how powerful a film or performance is. I hope this film is released on region2 as at present it is only available on region 1 so I could only watch it on my computer but it was still worth the purchase, I enjoyed the fil so much that if it does come out on region 2 I will re-invest in the copy. All in all I think that is recommendation for how good a film it is!

From knowing Chris Colfer in Glee, I immediately recognized the actor from the poster. I had no high expectations for this film, but I was fairly impressed with the mother-son chemistry between the two actors and the screenplay. At some times it was even emotional, however not amazing. But for a low budget film it's certainly more appealing than most hollywood films. Overall I would give this 6.9/10. The story was fairly weak, but I felt the acting made up for it.

The great thing about a year of Amazon Prime (£59 in the July deal) is the excuse to watch things you would probably never pay for, and that's certainly the category in which I'd put 'Struck By Lightning'. I daresay Chris Colfer is an acquired taste, but I'm a fan and was interested to see how he'd fare beyond the "Glee' universe, especially in a movie he wrote himself.

The movie is quirky and maintains a Glee-friendly light tone while addressing "serious issues" including Carson's mother's alcoholism and his father's absence from his life since his parents' separation. Colfer is believable and engaging as "literary" schoolboy Carson Phillips, and he receives solid support from the adult cast, but the teenage actors' skills are in truth mainly of the photogenic variety. Still, eye candy is part of what the audience expects from this kind of entertainment, and in that respect (imho) this movie is at least up to 'Glee' standards.

The plea for greater ambition in schools - from both pupils and teachers! - is worthy and heartfelt, but ultimately it's too simplistic to lift this movie out of the "watch it for the actor you like" domain. One viewing is enough, so I'm glad to have chosen it as my very first Amazon Prime show, in the midst of tackling '24 - Season 1' as my first box set. (That review to follow when the day is done...)

I really enjoyed this film. Is it true that it's quite sad in places, but this sadness is true to life and gives depth to the film. Off setting the sadness is a dark humour and great character development from the main roles. Not your normal film where everything is okay at the end but its relative shortness also adds to its charm. One to watch!

Unexpectedly Touching Movie, Good mix of emotional pull, funny moments and realistic character types and their parts within the world built for us.
Worth a relaxed play when you have some free quiet time, but not "Full" enough to suit a movie night/wknd etc. for myself and likely most people.

I am a massive fan of Chris Colfer and love all his work. But this was a bit of a let down If I'm being honest.

I really hate myself for saying this as I really wanted to love this film. But I couldn't. I still love ya Chis. But this isn't your best work :(

This film was rather depressing, in that the relationship between Carson and his mum is so sad. However, the high school cliches are treated in a novel way, and it is laugh out loud funny in places. The quirky character of Melanie embodies these two impressions the film had on me - she's pitiable and wonderful at the same time.
