About the author

Simon "Si" Spurrier writes novels and comics.
His work in the latter field stretches from award winning creator-owned books such as 'The Spire', 'Coda' and 'Angelic' to projects in the U.S. mainstream like 'Hellblazer', 'The Dreaming' and 'X-Men'. He and his works have been nominated for Eisner Awards multiple times.
His prose works range from the beatnik neurosis-noir of 'Contract' ("A tour de force" - The Times) to the occult whodunnit 'A Serpent Uncoiled' ("Gargantuan literary flourishes" - The Truth About Books). His experimental e-novella 'Unusual Concentrations' was shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Awards.
He lives in Margate, UK.

It's a funny and well-written tale of galactic excess, religious gullibility and good old-fashioned criminal activity. The action is set in some imaginative locations and feature brutal fights, gritty violence and plenty of Pratchettesque side eye and humorous asides.
Makes for a decent read, but some fans might find this Johnny Alpha a little too tortured and hard-bitten compared to Wagner's original.
its worthy of a place on your book shelf
I enjoyed the first prose book in this series also, Bad Timing by Rebecca Levene.
Unfortunately this book by Simon Spurrier is terrible. It is trying too hard to be clever and in doing so the pacing of the story suffers greatly.
It is unnecessarily over descriptive, how this got past an editor mystifies me it should have been trimmed down to provide a much better story focus.
I had got 30% into the story and had got so frustrated with unneeded blether and lack of progress that I gave up. (which to be honest I very rarely do, I think this is only the fourth book I have DNF'ed). I might try it again, but I doubt it and I certainly will give Simon Spurrier a wide berth from now onward.
