Strontium Dog: Portrait of a Mutant (Strontium Dog Graphic Novels) Paperback – 15 Aug. 2013
In the far future, Strontium-90 fallout has created a race of mutants. Outcasts from society, they are despised by the 'norms' and given only the dirtiest job bounty hunting. Johnny Alpha is one such mutant, working for the Search/Destroy Agency, hunting down the criminals for the Galactic Crime Commission. Portrait of a Mutant explores Johnny Alpha's tragic early years fighting for survival amongst the ranks of the Mutant Army against his hate-filled father Kreelman, and features the introduction of many popular supporting characters such as the Torso from Newcastle and the knobbly-headed Glaswegian, Middenface McNulty. This B-format collection is the perfect introduction to the classic character.

This is the introduction you are looking for if you are entirely, or as I was only vaguely familiar with the character from later comic strips, if you know the character its the origin story for Johnny Alpha, the "Strontium Dogs"/man hunters and some of Johnny Alpha's unique arsenal, ie "time bombs" which trap people in a loop, allow them to perform escapes or transports them to the icy vacuum of space (chilling).
The art and writing is great, its positively Shakespearean the kinds of relationship dynamics the comic sets up, with the scourge of the mutants being Johnny's own estranged father, originally encountered as a fugitive with a bounty on his head and giving rise to Johnny telling his origin tale. The politics of the anti-mutant persecution/mutant liberation struggle are interesting, and very british, featuring parliament, monarchy, some cut out welsh stereotypes for fun, the twists and turns are great, while there is enough in the way of plain old action, weird mutant abilities, sci fi weapons too keep things trundling along.
In contrast I found the story which followed, about a shape shifting mutant being hunted by Johnny and his partners after they meet a washed up SD agent who has clues about who the villain is posing as at that time in particular to be more than a little prosaic and formulaic. Still, I would have loved this story and its more straight forward twist in the tale as a kid.

Great story and artwork. But this size of a paperback edition is just an insult. You need to have better than 20/20 vision to read the dialogue. Whoever thought this was a good idea should be fired.

Simply put this is early 80`s 2000AD at its absolute best. The entire origins of Johny Alpha and the S/D agency in one story. And then there is the satire/shoot em up the Shickleburger Grab. This story is a treat and my personal favourite comics book character Johny Alpha is brought totally to life by Grant/Wagner's script (Which is superb) and Ezquezra's art which is always great. My only gtipe is the paper seems thinner than normal. That is how good this comic is, that is my only grumble!

This is not a criticism of the story - if you are reading this you will appreciate the art of Carlos Ezquerra etc.
This is a review of the format. I thought this was going to be the size of the Judge Dredd / Strontium Dog Chronicle books (i.e. fairly large and squareish). Instead, this is the size of a small paperback novel. As any 2000AD fan will know, the early 80s publications were basically square in shape. As a result, they do not reproduce well in a paperback format. There is a 2 inch white space top and bottom, with the story squeezed into a narrow letterbox in the middle of the page. As a result, the graphics are tiny and the lettering minute and hard to read without straining.
Rebellion should be congratulated for making so many classic 2000AD stories available, but this paperback format is completely wrong for such stories.
I like the collected story volumes but even there I feel there is significant room for improvement. As a child, I loved 2000AD, the colour centrefolds particularly - it was so exciting to see Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, Johnny Alpha et al in full colour, even if it was just 2 pages. I wish the Rebellion reprints included the great colour sections - that would be perfect.

Comics were meant to be good

And Carlos Ezquerra telling the story about Johnny Alpha is the best. The Strontium Dog tale is my favorite of the 2000 AD story-lines, and it all begins here. If I were stranded on a desert island and could only have one graphic novel, it would be this one. Carlos Ezquerra is the standard for artistic story-telling, and Alan Grant and John Wagner have written the stories with great enthusiasm and development. The premise of the Strontium Dog world is different from your standard "mutant" world in comics. The mutants of this world are "mutations" caused by a "chemical" holocaust and the battle between "norms" (people not mutated) and mutants is more of one for liberty, respect and equality. There is much parody within the pages of these great tales, and there is much more character than your average comic.
