Sometimes you start a book and it grips you from the beginning, this is one of those. Very well written, and it stays with you long after you've finished it. I read it in 3 hours and really enjoyed it, although I feel guilty for enjoying it so much.

Here are book reviews from some of my students who have read it.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a book a fellow peer recommended to me. Once I started it, I couldn’t get out of it. It’s an adventure book all about a boy called Bruno who is forced to leave his house and all is friends. In this book, I liked how it had many surprising plot twists and how it intrigues the reader. Although it’s a good book, I don’t think younger people will be able to handle it, as there are sad parts. Other than that, it’s an all-round good book!

A must read!
This loveable and funny novel will keep you reading chapter after chapter; as soon as you start reading, you will not be able to put it down! This book is a must have This book will make you feel emotional as Bruno meets his new friend Shmuel; the book really attracts your emotions as Bruno moves to a concentration camp because of the war. Things go wrong as Bruno tries to save his friend Shmuel … I recommend this book for 11 year olds and over because this book really makes you sad and you will never forget the book once you’ve finished it. Bruno is a child who has to move from Berlin. Shmuel is a child who is Jewish and he is treated poorly. Bruno lives with his parents (a family of 4) who have to face multiple challenges to help Shmuel survive the concentration camp as they swap places to give Shmuel his best experience before… death.
Ali, 11 years old.

I read this book with no knowledge of what it was about or the significance of the striped pyjamas. It left me speechless. I keep asking myself why I didn't pick up this book before. It will stay with me in the same way as Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird and other such classics have because lets not kid ourselves that's what this is. Simply wow and heartbreaking. If I could give this book more then 5 stars I would. The character of little Bruno will stay with me forever. Well done John Boyne for creating a true masterpiece.

I read this book to my class of nine year olds who are the same age as Bruno in the story. It was funny at times because John Boyne has so perfectly captured the mind of the little boy. Sometimes, I would be about to read something that Bruno said or thought about a situation and the children would say it before I got there!
It's also a wonderful opportunity to get children to question things. Boyne's subtlety and his willingness to let the reader work out what's happening rather than to say it explicitly is a fantastic way to engage children with the book.
The story itself is powerful and deeply moving. I had a job not to cry as I was reading out the last chapter. I have never had my class sit so still and quiet!

A great read, even better than the film. If you liked the film you could also read The Boy Who Went To The Top Of The Mountain, by the same author, which references some of the characters in this book, but when they were younger. Also a very thought provocking read about human nature.

I bought this on Kindle as my 9 year old grandson mentioned he was reading it in class. While it is well written and keeps you wanting to read on, I think it is much too dark a theme for the nine year old recommended age group. I was a Primary School teacher for 40 years and would not want to read this with any class at that level.
