Product Description

Product Description

Saxophonist Scott Hamilton and his quartet recorded in London on 4th January, 2012. The repertoire performed that night was the perfect showcase for the saxophonist's melodic approach and included such evergreens as "Sweet and Lovely" and "Jitterbug Waltz", together with an earthy dedication to another tenorman, Zoot Sims on "Zoot's Blues".

Scott Hamilton first performed in the United Kingdom in 1978 and immediately became a favourite with British audiences. His association with Pizza Express' Dean Street Jazz Club in London spans a period of some thirty five years and, from the mid-1980's, he's performed in a quartet format for several residencies each year, delighting the audiences on every occasion.

The fluidity exhibited in this set is no accident as Scott's quartet with pianist John Pearce, bassist Dave Green and drummer Steve Brown has been a working unit since 2000, playing not only throughout Britain, but also in Europe and in 2012, Brazil.

With Scott's effortlessly swinging improvisations inspiring colourful, in-the-moment harmonic, rhythmic and melodic responses from his venerable, tight-knit trio fans of inspired music are invited to witness the superb results that can occur only when the most fluent and creative musicians engage in inspired musical dialogues.

Personnel: Scott Hamilton (tenor saxophone), John Pearce (piano), Dave Green (acoustic bass), Steve Brown (drums)

Review

(5 stars) A supreme master of the jazz tenor saxophone, Hamilton seems to get better with the years - even more fluent, more swinging, more adventurous...Live, straightahead jazz doesn't come much better than this. --The Observer, (Dave Gelly), February 23, 2014

(4 stars) Another richly satisfying release from Scott Hamilton, one of the great melodists of the tenor...Pearce, Green and Brown give sensitive support throughout, showing just why they are Hamilton's rhythm section of choice whenever he comes to town. --Jazz Journal, (Gordon Jack), April 2014

Hamilton sounds inspired and lively, relaxed and assured, happy to spin out his own pleasing variations on these good tunes. The supreme ballad master of our day, he can swing hard too, unflustered and in control. --Jazzwise, (Peter Vacher), April 2014

An album that has charm and poise. It could never have been captured in a studio in quite the same inspirational way. --Marlbank, (Stephen Graham), February 1, 2014

Hamilton sounds inspired and lively, relaxed and assured, happy to spin out his own pleasing variations on these good tunes. The supreme ballad master of our day, he can swing hard too, unflustered and in control. --Jazzwise, (Peter Vacher), April 2014

Another mellow masterpiece from US born but UK resident scott Hamilton. Recorded live at the Pizza Express Jazz Club this captures Hamilton at the top of his game. Accompanied by his regular trio of John Pearce(piano), Dave Green(bass) and Steve brown(drums) they have become a relaxed and close knit unit. Of course its standards all the way and fine one's they are too.
Hamilton of course never seems to put a foot wrong with his unhurried style and gorgeous full tone, he is tailor made for this kind relaxed swing. John Pearce on piano, as always, is swinging, lyrical and highly tasteful and the rhythm section doesn't really get any better than this. The cosey confines of the Pizza Express club lend themselves perfectly for live recordings and the sound quality is particularly good.
In case you havn't worked it out yet - i liked it !

This is Scott Hamilton at his usual level of excellence. I've been listening to him/collecting his albums for around 36 years now, and whilst he never, ever, makes a poor album, he rarely makes one that is outstanding or special. But maybe this is a bit like saying that consistently good isn't enough. It occurred to me, listening to this album, how much like Paul Gonsalves he sounds.

My favourite recordings of Mr Hamilton are on the many albums he (and Warren Vache) did with Rosemary Clooney. Now they are outstanding.

There's nothing whatsoever to dislike about this album. His fellow musicians complement his playing. The programme is unexceptionable, and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most" could well be the definitive instrumental version of this song. I bought this as an MP3 download, and at £4.99 it's a bargain.

I have seen this excellent quartet many times at the Ipswich Jazz Club. This Cd brings back many happy memories as this live Cd is like sitting in the front row. A must for all Scott Hamilton fans.

It sounds like you are in the front row at Pizza Express and that he is 6 feet away. Great CD.
