Product description

Product Description

The complete first and second series of the acclaimed drama from Jimmy McGovern where stories are told through neighbours living on the same street. Each story is unique and individual but linked by community, shared experience and an indomitable sense of humour. Starring Timothy Spall, Mark Benton, David Thewlis and Gina McKee, the drama explores unconventional lives in a street so tough that no-one wants to live there, and yet so tight-knit that no-one wants to leave.

This is a great couple of drama series - the best I have ever seen. Its been carefully written so that, even though there is an overall story to the series, every episode looks at a new family/character in the street. Each episode is almost like a short version (1 hour) of those great drama films the BBC make from time to time. The very last episode features a guy who was up for best newcomer at the '09 Baftas. I rarely buy tv series on dvd - especially not dramas, but this one is just full of great, realistic stories.

The Street is an absolute triumph - the grim reality of life on a northern street is encapsulated beautifully in these fantastic 12 episodes each focusing on a different household on the same street somewhere in Manchester. The characters are complex and involving, their lives offering something that the viewer can easily identify with, and their stories, whilst on the surface seem mundane, surprise and compel you to think.

The acting is second to none, the direction is pure perfection and the writing - led by the irrepressible Jimmy McGovern - is simply the cream of the crop.

A series that won't disappoint.

An excellent BBC drama about life on a normal street. Each episode focuses on one event in the life of a family on the street. Timothy Spall is absolutely brilliant, especially in the episode where he picks up a "fare" in his taxi. The passenger is an asylum seeker with nowhere to go. Much the disgust of his wife, Spall takes his passenger home and puts him up. A very thought that provoking episode - and series.
