DON'T BUY THIS JUST BECAUSE OF THE TBS CONNECTION. The sound is completly different, so much so that I urge anyone who is thinking of buying this to make sure they check out some of their work on their website before buying it.
Putting that aside this album is almost perfect. The only letdowns are the first track and the fact that 6 of the tracks have been available for download from their website for a while. These tracks have however had a reworking and feel much fresher and better for this effort. Highlights are definatlty The Tension and the terror, Existentialism on prom night and Mistakes we knew we were making as the powerful blended vocals of John and Michelle Nolan fit perfectly as do the piano parts.
Overall a very good album that deserves credit of it's own and an end to the TBS connection.

Firstly this is not anything like Taking Back Sunday but it is a thoughtful, beautifully written c.d. It hasn't been off my c.d player since it came out and everyone who's heard no matter their musical tastes has loved it. If you're looking for something fresh try this.

Everyone knows the TBS background and a lot of people feared the worst when John & Shawn left the band - stop panicking because now we have 2 amazing bands instead of 1!
Straylight's album is carried mostly by 'Tension & Terror', 'Existenialism on Prom Night' and 'Mistakes We Knew We Were Making' which are way too good for my simple words to describe. The rest of the album is pretty damn good too and only loses it's fifth star because of 'Tool Sheds & Hot Tubs' which is a little bit too disco for my liking and its pretty obvious that John let his sis get this one on the CD as a little dig at a certain someone from TBS!

I actually wanted to give this a 3.5 but thought it unfair to lower the ratings on my opinion. I like this album, but I can't help but feel that it either goes on for too long or that the album doesn't vary enough to keep my interest. If you're a big fan of the feel good indie/rock/pop/punk sound I think that you'll love this. It has a touch of 'Taking Back Sunday' with a hint of 'Dashboard Confessional'. There's been reviews suggesting this album sounds nothing like 'Taking back sunday', if you know the history it's pretty much impossible to not compare the two. If you only love the attack and presence of 'Taking Back Sunday' and expect that in 'Straylight Run' then this album may fall short for you.

If you like bands like Something Corporate then this is for you. Tracks 2, 3 and 5 are really great uplifting tracks with catchy choruses and great lyrics. The vocals are crisp and clear - sometimes even haunting at certain points and really work well together - especially the injection of the female vocalist which adds depth and rounds off any harsh edges the tracks could have retained. You will not be disappointed - a real gem that you will be glad you came across !
